Who are you more a fan of? I know you can’t compare but just curious , I heard that people tried to start a Feud with them in the 80's ? I'm more into Luther but I like Freddie too.

Of course he can! For a while there, they were the two biggest rivals. Freddie has never had the mindshare that Luther enjoyed with the R&B audience, but there was a time he was every bit as successful.

Luther's solo work was great from 1980 to around 1983. His production work for Aretha Franklin and Cheryl Lynn was great too around 1982 to 1983. I also loved the songs he did with Change. He had even been in a disco group prior to going solo.

Freddie on the other hand was in a funk group called Magic Merlin which had a hot jam called "Sixty Thrills A Minute". As for his solo work though....absolutely horrible. He was like a male version of Shitney Houston....no jams whatsoever.

It's no secret that Freddie was on Luther's nuts throughout the 1980's.

This is probably sacrilege around here but I'm gonna say it anyway: Luther was way overrated. Freddie was way underrated. Having said that, I think they're very comparable in terms of songs that I like.

I think Luther's albums were more stellar compared to Freddie. Freddie's Capitol albums always seemed empty to me (overall). My favorite (and I think most consistent album) is "Do Me Again".

A "jam" is a fast song, not a slow one. A good slow song is called a "slow jam" but just the word "jam" said by itself refers to fast ass shakin' music.

as for my pick, I would probably go with Luther "Hot Butterfly" Vandross

but I did enjoy Freddie's JUST LIKE THE FIRST TIME album

it's one of those albums that remind me of the 80's and my childhood

Freddie all the way! I agree with Vainandy though that Luther was perfect on his first 3 albums and his work with Aretha and Cheryl Lynn was tight. I just think Luther is a boring vocalist. His voice is beautiful but he never did anything different with it. I tend to fall asleep whenever I play his Essential Collection.

All I can say about Freddie though is that he did have a great run in the 1980s through early '90s. I saw a performance from him a few years ago, he did seem to have a lot of energy from what I saw.

You can't possibly bad mouth California because the state is too big and heavily populated, plus we're still among the largest economies in the world - nothing bad to say about an entire state. Don't judge the whole city of los angeles by a few square miles either. Some areas are drug ridden and some are not. Some people can still come here and make their dreams come true. Not everybody in LA is on crack and awaiting their next hit single. Now um...West Hollywood...I aint defending that shit no how no way.

I get what you're saying Luther definitely had more "jams" than Freddie.Early in Luther's career,his albums were a perfect balance of uptempo jams and ballads.In the late 70s,he appeared on Chic's albums too,so he definitely knew how to groove.Some of his best uptempo jams....

"She's A Super Lady" (1981)

"It's Over Now" (1985)

Of course,in the late 80s and into the 90s,his ballads and slow jams began to dominate but he had his share of uptempo jams earlier in his career.

Freddies' albums were slower,concentrating mainly on sexy slow jams.He rarely released uptempo songs as singles.
