Prince is so much more versatile than Stevie

doing and cross-overing nearly every musical genre there is

therefore he is better than him imo

I hate them I am even posting to this thread, but I fell for it.

I understand how some in this forum can view some people in the P M&M forums as crazy because they are - there are folks in there who are crazy lovers and haters of Prince. However, what is odd to me is how dismissive some of the people in this forum are of Prince's talents. If you don't dig him like that it is cool, but how can you diminish his accomplishments?

As a fan of myriad artists and musical styles, I understand where Chuckii Booker is coming from. Prince might not be the greatest singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, performer, bassist, drummer, pianist/keyboardist, dancer, filmmaker, actor, businessman, etc. However, I honestly cannot think of another artist who has or can do all of those things as Prince does or has done throughout the years. How many artists make the "best" lists in as many different categories as Prince? I just cannot think of any who perform at such a high level in so many different areas.

Some of the greats like Marvin, Stevie, Bob Marley, Curtis, Michael, Dylan, Springsteen, Sam Cooke, Sly Stone, Queen, Zeppelin, Santana, Zappa, Jeff Beck, Coltrane, Miles, etc. are great singers or great songwriters or geat musicians or great producers or great performers but they are not all-in-one deals the way Prince is. Therefore, I understand the whole artist of a lifetime thing. Whether one digs him as deeply as others, you cannot deny that he has established himself as an accomplished artist in many different categories in a way that no other artist before or since him has.

No. And i base that on many factors, one being that P is the most versatile in both categories and has his own style to add to it. Stevie can be imitated as a whole....can Prince?

Sign O The Times is at least 2x as good as SITKOL.

Seems most critics would agree, too.

I regularly see Sign O' The Times higher than SITKOL in those "Best Albums" lists by the likes of Rolling Stone, etc.....

Rolling Stone has it listed as 93 and SITKOL is 56.

I hate Wiki as a source but they do have references.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_o%27_the_Times_%28album%29

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_in_the_Key_of_Life

Now I don't expect most Prince fans to rate Stevie's album over Prince's and whose album is the best may very well be a personal preference. But if we go by what critics say, what awards say and what people say, it's SITKOL.

Sorry. lol

Agreed. And I love Stevie for reals. But I think Prince edges him out just a bit on both fronts. More on the singing side. Again, I dig Stevie, but he pretty much just does Stevie. Very little variation to his singing in his 40 year career.

Let's see, off the top of my head... "For Once in My Life," "Until You Come Back to Me," "Living for the City," "Power Flower," and "Rocket Love,"... I'd say there is a great deal of variety in Stevie's singing on those songs alone.

Is Stevie better than Prince a serious discussion???

I know this is a Prince site, but anyone can see that Prince blows Stevie out of the water, and does it in high heels.

Seriously???

confused

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Blows out of the water? Wow.

I would say that Prince is definitely more an entertainer than Stevie when it comes to shows n stuff, because well Prince can be creative in that area cause he can see. That being said, people need to go to a Stevie concert, Stevie can still entertain a crowd.

Musicality is different. Stevie can play ANYTHING Prince can play. And I don't mean insturments, I mean different styles of music. Stevie does stay in his soul/pop/funk/world music/ zone while Prince plays with more different styles, which I do give credit for. So its not a matter of whos better inas somuch as whos music you prefer, which for me would be Stevie.

I think Stevie best, which very few can touch is melodies, which even through his "lesser" albums which he was doing more pop oriented and current music, his melodies were strong and interesting. I can't say the same for Prince post 80's output; sometimes he'll get into a groove and just stick there without really exploring a song, and he does that too much on his 90's albums for me, except for Gold Experience and most of Emancipation. On the bright side, Prince prolific nature of recording is impressive and great; I'll always put my ear on a new Prince tune cause I know when the man is AWN it, hes awn it.

Vocals? I think they both possess the same amount of versatility but in different areas. Whoever said Stevie sounds the same on every song isn't listening.

Prince edges out Stevie on a lot of things, but it really comes down to what type of music moves you more. Prince does NOT blow Stevie out of the water talent wise though.
