McCartney To Play Apollo Theater

Sir Paul McCartney

Nov 17, 2010

Paul McCartney is to make his first appearance at New York's legendary Apollo Theater next month.

The former Beatle, 68, will perform at the Harlem venue on 13 December in an invitation-only concert for paid-for radio service Sirius XM.

The show will celebrate the service, which has six channels, reaching 20 million subscribers.

Michael Jackson, who Paul sang with on tracks including 1982's "The Girl Is Mine", launched his career at the venue.

He first appeared at the fabled Harlem theatre with his brothers as The Jackson Five in 1967, when they won the Apollo's Amateur Night contest.

The non-profit venue, currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, became renowned as the launch pad for a generation of R&B stars, including Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Ben E King.

I wonder if he'll perform something like Arrow Through Me.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I read that he covered Marvin Gaye's "Hitch Hike" duing the set. That's one rendition I'm dying to hear!

It seems Paul had some equipment problems during the show.

Paul brought some honeys to serve as backup dancers. Who would have thunk it?

They didn't seem to have much energy like the dancers that used to be on Shindig. biggrin
