I just saw the show not too long ago, the only thing I'm not buying about is the subject about her ex, Eddie or something like that.
It's easy to believe stories about female singers being abused and/or taken advantage of by their husband/manager, but it didn't fly in this episode.
I think he was the stable one and Micki was the nut in the relationship, she probably jumped on him, and she had sustain defensive wounds from him.
Plus the show tried to say that her ex was the cause of her career suffering, I call bullshit on that also. Record companies already don't give a damn about you unless you pulling platinum sellers, she just didn't have it.
I hope next season they'll do something on Cherrelle because both her and Micki's career parallel each other but Cherrelle had that it factor more than Micki and I think she was exiled (I hate the term "blackballed") from the industry also.

I've always wondered why Cherrelle never released anything between 1991 and 1999.

Riiiight!
And I'm sure thats why he declined to do the interview anyway, Miki already acknowledged her mental issues and she also acknowledged that she was the one with the "daddy" issue(I hate this word too), hence why she was in a destructive relationship after the other,,,,,I think she took full claim of her misjudgments from the interview.
I agree with you though that the show was biased regarding the decline of her career. It was THAT among the accumulations of other stuff too,,including her. But it wasn't because she wasn't platinum, her last record for Atlantic was a big seller and still they didn't give her the time of day SIMPLY because like she said, they didn't have the money to bill her as the so-called "Next Whitney" and thats why she went to this bogus label(by Stephanie Mills' sister-in-law I believe? somebody correct) - BIG mistake.
Anyway, I was surprised they didn't talk about the burning of her house,,,,that would've been a meaty unsung material.

Did the house that burn down-was that in Atlanta-was arson suspected? Also, why was Cherrelle exiled? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Very nice episode-Miki is still a very pretty lady I found her on and off relationship with Gerald Levert to be interesting Sad that they never could make it work-they were probably meant to be This episode has given me a renewed love for Come Share My Love-what a fantastic song! It still sounds beautiful today. Miki's kids look like great kids and I'm glad their mother conquered most of her drug problems. Nice to see that Miki still loves singing through it all.

anyone sharing the anita baker story while we are at it, what about the suspected arson? minor keys and drugs don't make a rollerskate jam

It really isn't the big juicy scandal some folks are making it out to be. Miki won an award at the Black Gold Awards or something back in the 80's. Anita saw her back stage, congratulated her and told her she should treasure it because it's the only award she was ever going to get. Yeah, it was real bitchy of Anita to say that but she was right. I used to love Miki Howard back in the day but had completley forgotten about her and her music until this Unsung.
I always thought that she must have been very classy, I suppose because of her ballads. Didn't know she was so wild. I just couldn't figure out if she was simply crazy in this interview, or if she was high???

How come nobody mentioned that Val Young is featured in this episode... I've always wondered what happen to her

I'm giving her props for getting help, but really she sounded crazy or high as a kite

Here's an interview from 2006 with Wendy Wiliams. Wendy mentions Miki has red eyes & among things discussed,Miki tells her she smokes weed from time to time & she says it with her daughter present to which Wendy didn't know this was her daughter & then asked could her daughter step out so she could talk to her freely. Miki's a trip.

I think Cherelle just suffered the same fate as Alex O'Neal. Jam and Lewis got busy with the Mo Money soundtrack which left them no time to work on subsequent Cherrelle and O'Neal albums post 1990. Also the duo started there on Perspective label and signed new artists which kind of left Cherrelle and O'Neal out in the cold. Don't laugh at my funk

Val has been virtually forgotten. Leaving Motown and signing with another label proved an unwise career decision . She has a website.

Why didn't they take Cherrelle and Alex with them? I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Rick James' protege I believe. The Black Gold Awards were an awards show dedicated to just black artists. I think it aired regularly on WGN until the "Soul Train Awards".

Didja see her on The Monique Show" last year? She still got the voice, but you could clear as day see that she'd been thru some shit over the years.....I always wondered if Micki and Gerald had somethin goin a la Michael Henderson & Phyllis Hyman

Nah it didn't start with Mo Money, limited studio time 4 anyone not with New Edition or Janet Jackson started back in 88'-89' with NE's Heartbreak and Ms Jackson's Rhythm Nation. Shit man, by 90' Teddy Riley's New Jack Swing was the sound on the streets, the clubs, and the charts and anybody not willing to adapt was either gonna have to get theirs on tour or sit on the shelves.

Thanks for posting this. Gives me new perspective. I can now give her the benefit of the doubt as, she sounds the same in this interview. She sounds like a free spirit who's honest. Perhaps her candor, which is so rare these days, made her appear high.

Jimmy and Terry produced Cherrelle's Affair album in 1988. I don't think the time spent on NE Heartbreak in 1988 had anything to with Cherrelle's album considering NE Heartbreak was released first. It was my understanding to that a few of the songs on Affair were originally intended for Janet while A&M and Jam/Lewis were negotiating to do the followup to control. Yes there was limited studio time but i remember Cherrelle saying so herself the reason they didn't produce the followup to Affair was because they were working on the Mo Money soundtrack where they were working with so many artists. Prof T and Lance Alexander(in the Flyte Tyme camp) produced Cherrelle's followup to Affair and the followup to All True Man for Alexander O'Neal. Yes some artists sucked New Jack's cock but artists like Zapp, the BarKays(Animal), Cameo(Real Men Wear Black), The Time(Pandemonium) stayed true to form.

Just for the record Miki was managed by one Joesph Jackson.... and this kid has spent a lot of time with the family
check out this part of an interview he gave
How do you know the Jackson family? B. Howard: My mother was managed by Joseph way long before I was even born. He was one of their first managers. They took care of me, gave me food, and everything. They’ve always been there. They’re like my family. How do you feel about people comparing you to Michael Jackson? B. Howard: It takes a lot of pressure off, actually. I just like to give a good show and give the fans what they want, like him. How did you take the news about Michael’s death? B. Howard: It was pretty tough. At the time I was at Havenhurst (Katherine’s home), I had spent the night over at the house, and Katherine left early in the morning without saying anything. So, I was wondering where did they go. Alejandra (Jermaine Jackson’s ex-wife) had come out with me for one of my meetings, and then everyone started calling my phone saying Michael’s in the hospital, what’s going on? Now, I’m in the meeting looking at the phone, like there is always some type of rumor going on. So, I told Alejandra to check on this and surely he was on his way to the hospital. It was odd, my heart just went to my stomach. Very odd. On the way to the hospital Alejandra was crying her eyes out, and I was just trying to be strong. As a person, I was just trying to hold it together. But, when we got to the hospital that was it.
Dang how do you post video on here? I tried to use the embed code but it wouldn't show up. [Edited 11/3/10 15:53pm] Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

Val Young was once complimented by Pyro John (Rick's fireworx stage-tech) as being the best metronome onstage ...

Color me dumb, but what does that mean, best metronome onstage-she swayed back and forth or something. And yes, I know what I just said is pure comedy-that's how you know I'm not totally dumb. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."
