"Livin' In The Life/Go For Your Guns" by The Isley Brothers
Now THIS is The Isley Brothers the I know and love and this jam is my very first memory of them. They used to play this jam at the skating rink during what was called a "Black Out Skate". They would turn all the disco lights off, including the disco ball, and have only a strobe light flashing. Motherfuckers would skate really fast to this jam. You would get your ass run over out on that floor.
It's a damn shame that so many people, especially younger people, think that The Isley Brothers is a damn balladeer group because the tired ass radio has mainly played just their slow jams thoughout the years. . . . [Edited 10/20/10 14:51pm] Andy is a four letter word.

^ I agree."Go For Your Guns" is my fave Isley Brothers for sure. I mean c'mon, Climbing Up The Ladder, Voyage To Atlantis, Livin' In The Life. Rock/RnB/Funk it's all there. It's a perfect album from start to finish. Period. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Any 70s babies remember on the Gong Show when they DIDNT play the live jazz cut while Gene Gene the Dancing Machine would dance, and play Go For Your Guns instead?!! That was just awesome as a kid to hear that jam on television. I thought to myself, "wow, those white people know who the Isley Brothers are" Katie Kinisky: "So What Are The Latest Dances, Nell?"

Get your ass up to the record store right now! Andy is a four letter word.

It is. I actually think it's a full-fledged rock affair. "Tell Me When You Need It Again", "Livin' in the Life", "Climbing Up the Ladder", even "Voyage to Atlantis" had more of a rock sound than a typical R&B sound...

Oh very much so. The first time I heard "Livin' In The Life" in the skating rink (this was back when I still listened to white radio), I thought it was a rock song from a white rock group. I also was probably around age 10 at the time. But also during the disco era, there were rock groups like Boston "More Than A Feeling" and Foreigner "Hot Blooded" that were getting regular play also (even though rockers like to act like disco was forcing them out) so I just assumed at the time that "Livin' In The Life" was a rock song that I hadn't heard yet on white radio. I have bought 3+3 and Live It Up on cd. Also bought Between The Sheets on cd to when cd's first became the phenomenon. The rest i have on vinyl or cassette which i will convert to cd. I've already done Showdown and Go All the Way. I can't wait to do the rest especially Winner Takes All. Don't laugh at my funk

phunkdaddy
I'm sorry until you get that album, I'm just gonna have to remove the phunk and just call you daddy. Wait, this could be seen as being provocative.
Your name will have to be this until further notice.

You set yourself up for that one. Now you know i wouldn't have any problem with you calling me daddy. On the real it's not like i've never admired the album but it was just one of those albums i never got around to purchasing probably because i already have The Pride and Voyage To Atlantis on MP3. I will make that a priority soon since i've been already warned by Soul and Vain. Don't laugh at my funk

I give Harvest for the World a slight edge over Go for Your Guns as my favorite Isleys album. I love every song on both, though. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

When Ernie kicks off the intro to "Voyage", I thought the sound under his guitar was Chris Jasper on his organ, but I found out Ernie was using an effect on his pedal. [Edited 10/23/10 8:03am] [Edited 10/23/10 8:05am] [Edited 10/23/10 8:36am]

Yep, he did the same thing for "That Lady" and other songs. I don't know why people were trying to say that was Chris doing that on his organ. Weird lol

Went out today to look for Go For Your Guns and the record store didn't have it. I wound up buying The Real Deal album for 1.99 I got one question for Isley Brother fans here. How the fuck did this album go under the radar? This album is bad. I've read before where some stated this album and Inside You were subpar. I actually like this album better than the Between The Sheets album. I know it had the popular title cut and Choosey Lover and the whole first side of the album was cool along with Ballad of the Fallen Soldier but the uptempo songs were boring and monotonous. I liked the direction they went in with The Real Deal. Vain should dig this one as this album wasn't ballad heavy like Between The Sheets. I think the whole album was pretty solid save Are You With Me and Ernie still lay some killer licks on it. Stone Cold Lover and It's Alright With Me are two of my favorites from the album. I remember in my area The Real Deal and I'll Do It All For You(which is a fantastic number)got very little airplay. Underappreciated album. Don't laugh at my funk

In my opinion, or from my perspective, it didn't. Though much of the classic Funk from back in the day never really ever got much airplay or media attention, and you were really ever aware of it because you went to the record stores on a regular basis, or otherwise it was music you heard at local parties in your neighborhood (in the basement, with the one red light-bulb screwed into the ceiling, lol). Back in the days before MTV, VH1, BET, or even the Internet, you learned of what was hot through word of mouth, or because you were otherwise doing your homework at the local record stores.
In other words, if you weren't actually "there" when it came out, a lot of stuff could have seemed to fly under the radar, because radio (and Greatest Hits collections) have done a very poor job at reflecting the best of what was out there. I've got tons of Funk from back in the day that never made it to CD, and the radio never plays it, and in many cases; never did.

I listened to the couple of tracks on Go For Your Guns i wasn't familiar with on Go For Your Guns and it was good. For me though i still like The Heat Is On and Go All The Way better. Don't laugh at my funk

"The Pride" "Livin' In The Life" "Voyage To Atlantis" "Footsteps In The Dark"
I think these four songs make 'Go For Your Guns' a masterpiece The remaining songs are good too,but those four songs listed above are incredible.

I love "The Real Deal". That was a hot jam back in the summer of 1982. The Isley Brothers had also produced this group that same summer.....
Talk about a JAM! Andy is a four letter word.
