Surprising because even country hasn't been the same since Shania showed 'em the pop blueprint.

You know what? I make jokes, but I actually have a firm appreciation for Country music as well, particularly as I have grown older. Though ironically, I absolutely HATED it when I actually lived in North Carolina between 1974 and 1980. But that was mainly because I didn't want to be in North Carolina (...I was born & grew up in NYC, but my family moved to NC when my Dad retired).
So, once I moved from there in '81 out to Los Angeles, I began revisiting groups like Lynard Skynard, The Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels, Jackson Browne, and the like. I guess once I was a comfortable enough distance away from the actual South, I was able to appreciate it more. Some Country songs actually stir warm memories for me today. I find the lyrics in Country music go really deep.
Most recently, I've been playing Willie Nelsons' new "Country Music" CD a lot, and even have a few new favorite songs from it, lol. So I agree with you that appreciating other types of music is a big part of being FUNKY.
