The Dominoes (ft. Clyde McPhatter) - Have Mercy Baby

Everybody thinks either Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Little Richard or even James Brown were the first artists to bring out what became "soul music", well this song was a big hit on the R&B chart in 1952 and the style is what all five of them tried to imitate. wink

Wanna debate that? lol

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I never went exploring that much into the early days, but always cool to read where a genre,

sound or style originated from. Btw, is Clyde laughing or crying towards the fading part ? hmmm lol

Dominoes, much respect. A group with some great singers (Clyde and latter on Jackie Wilson.)

The 5 Royals and Hank Ballard and the Midnighters might have a say on the first to usher in soul also.

lol

I think the "5" Royales have more of a case. lol I think the Midnighters did too but they were also the forerunners of rock (as were the Royales and Dominoes).

That said both groups were influenced by the Dominoes.

Crying.

Here's another song where he does the same thing (this time throughout the song):

^ good sound quality too ^

was the crying a part of his act in general, or was there a deeper meaning to it ? ... did he choose particular, or more dramatic songs for it ?

Well of course during that time repetition was strong so I guess Clyde wanted to bring out the tear effect to a song similar to "Have Mercy Baby". "The Bells" has a gospel sound too so that could be a reason lol
