Everybody thinks either Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Little Richard or even James Brown were the first artists to bring out what became "soul music", well this song was a big hit on the R&B chart in 1952 and the style is what all five of them tried to imitate.

sound or style originated from. Btw, is Clyde laughing or crying towards the fading part ? lol

Dominoes, much respect. A group with some great singers (Clyde and latter on Jackie Wilson.)

The 5 Royals and Hank Ballard and the Midnighters might have a say on the first to usher in soul also.

I think the "5" Royales have more of a case. I think the Midnighters did too but they were also the forerunners of rock (as were the Royales and Dominoes).

That said both groups were influenced by the Dominoes.

Well of course during that time repetition was strong so I guess Clyde wanted to bring out the tear effect to a song similar to "Have Mercy Baby". "The Bells" has a gospel sound too so that could be a reason lol
