P-Funk's Flashlight is just as uptempo as Rick's You And I. But no one dares to typecast P-Funk as disco. wink

The closet to disco would probably be:

Parlets

Wolf Tickets, Pleasure Principle, Ridin High

To name a few

But they still had grooves in them dancing jig that's the diff....

Flashlight???...hmmm dunno

That mug was waaaay up there....

The funk part for Rick's You And I was the horns...definitely biggrin

One is clearly the product of the other shrug

I've never been a purist listener myself, so as much as I love my funk, I need something to break off the routine, disco will do, as long as there's some gut bucket wailing in there.

Anyway, it kinda strikes me funny that there're some people who are down on disco but will listen to something from Huff & Gamble's Philly records,,,,,with them being the sole influence on disco and all.

I agree though, that disco became formulaic in its later years which made folks weary of it, I mean If everybody from Ethel Merman & the Sesame Street gang made a disco record, you know the shit wasn't what it cranked up to be.

The funniest thing about the whole "disco sucks" episode though was, FUNK artists(which of some whom never even touched a disco beat) was slammed as "disco" too and therefore they too got the end of the stick.

I like variety! From funk's raw, organic, soul-stirring origins in the mid/late 60s and early 70s, to the slicker party jams of the mid/late 70s, to the synth-funk of the 80s - give me some of everything.

I don't like straight-up cheesy disco, but a blend of disco and funk is alright with me.

i'm sorry, but i'm not down with half the shit being said in this thread.

first of all, disco in hindsight was one of the most fun and original music genres/fads to come along maybe ever. the reason why i loved funk is the same reason i loved disco. THE BASS.

every disco record, pretty much the bassist is the baddest mofo in the band. and that's when you know the music is good.

all the "disco sucks" shit that came later ushered in new wave and punk and to be honest looking back neither one of those genres amounted to shit and have any lasting legacy (yeah, i said it).

i do prefer my funk with the disco influences but will take it with the synth too if the bassist is on his shit.

alright, i'm done.

HEY! I love new wave and punk and all of that. I'm guess I'm kinda rare that any music that came out in that era (1970s) I loved them all. Same with the 1980s and 1990s. I guess I'm not a purist. shrug lol
