WTF? Susan Boyle and Lou Reed Collaborate?

"Lou takes a walk on the mild side" - great line. lol

Um, Whaat??? Lou Reed Co-Directs Susan Boyle's "Perfect Day" Video

Posted Mon Nov 8, 2010 9:32am PST by Lyndsey Parker
  • Earlier this year, "Britain's Got Talent" darling Susan Boyle flew all the way out to L.A. from the United Kingdom and left her poor cat Pebbles at home, just to perform her cover of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" on a results-show episode of "America's Got Talent." But when she got there, she learned she would not be allowed to sing the song after all. The official explanation for this snub was some sort of last-minute copyright/clearance issue, but rumor mills on both sides of the pond went into overdrive with allegations that Lou had just forbidden to have his cool 1972 pre-punk classic mangled by the matronly opera singer. Lou denied such reports, of course, but the damage to his reputation was done. Millions of SuBo supporters were peeved that Lou had messed with Scotland's sweetheart.

Well, now Susan has released a video for her "Perfect Day" cover (off her upcoming new album The Gift), and guess what? Put this in the truth-is-way-stranger-than-fiction file: According to a Sony Music rep, SuBo took "creative direction" from the Velvet Underground legend himself when shooting the video, so Lou Reed has been given co-director credit on the clip.

Yes, this actually happened.

It's unclear whether Susan and Lou are exactly BFFs now--last night in the U.K., she described him as "childish" during a TV interview with her old mentor, "BGT" judge Piers Morgan. But it turns out that interview was shot weeks ago. Since then, the two have reportedly made up and have become the oddest couple in pop since Lady Gaga recorded with Michael Bolton.

So apparently, looking at the video above (which was co-directed by Howard Greenhalgh), Lou envisions Susan's perfect day as one that involves braving the elements at Scotland's Trussochs National Park. (One insider at the shoot said the wind was so fierce, it blew SuBo's wig off at one point.) Lou told Britain's Sunday Mail: "I wanted to create a beautiful and intimate piece shot in Susan's native Scotland, and she quickly agreed." Added his new buddy Susan: "I loved that Lou understood how much it meant to me to film in Scotland. I didn't mind how much it rained or blew a gale--I enjoyed every minute."

So, what do you think of this odd move on Lou's part? Does he just feel guilty about that whole "America's Got Talent" scandal? Is he a genuine SuBo fan? Or has he masterminded the most subversive act in punk? I can't imagine it's the latter--SuBo's overblown and copiously string-laden cover of his formerly dark ballad is about as unpunk as it gets--but it sure is interesting to imagine Susan taking a walk on the wild side, or Lou taking a walk on the mild side.

Good point andykeen.

Maybe the blocking of the public performance and the whole snippy back and forth reported in the story were calculated for maximum controversy to sell more records.

It sounds like he has to approve the songs, I know people who cover Springsteen, Bruce actually listens to it before he signs off on it. Someone who works for him or the publishing company prob. couldn't get a hold of him on time and had to deny her. Odds are it's the UK company who publishes his songs that are to blame.

Reed did an AT&T ad with that song!!! I think he's even in it. During the Olympics, so there was a lot of money made from it. Why would he tell Susan not to perform it? She had already recorded it. It's not like he has any personal attachment to it 40 years later, but I think people took it as a protest against "Idol" shows, which I'm pretty sure Reed would not be much of a fan of. "Walk on the Wild Side" has also been used in ads.

"Walk on the Wild Side" is still one of the most subversive hit songs on radio. Transvestites, oral sex,and taking speed.

But what he did complain about was "Factory Girl" with Sienna Miller.

Not simply protecting one's intellectual property but properly stewarding it is probably what's at work here. May be a lot to think through.
