I like Rick, sure, but he's a funk midget compared to JB

Has anyone tried unplugging the United States and plugging it back in?

I used to prefer Slick Rick due to his time in the music industry(his peak being in the early 80s and what not).

But Soul Brother #1 is my fave at this point. I mean, there was no escape from him influence wise,,,,if George Clinton, Bernie Worrell and all of those guys drew their inspirations from him, you know the man paid his dues musically.

Rick James by far. James Brown may be the Godfather but his stuff being funk in it's early stages, sounds so primitive. They are both funk from different eras so it's all in the era in which you personally prefer.

I have to go with Rick on this one because he was a hell of a vocalist. James Brown sounds like a mess to my ears, but I do like his music....just not feeling the vocals at all.

Honestly, I wouldn't really compare the two because their music is so different stylistically. Yeah, it's both funk but they sound NOTHING alike.

I think the only reason they're "compared" to is one had his stage surname as "James" and the other guy's first name is "James" otherwise BAD COMPARISONS! lol

You've said that before, and I don't quite understand it. James Brown's early Funk was far from primitive .. in fact, it was much more sophisticated than his later material. If you listen to live recordings from the James Brown Orchestra 1966 - 1969/70, that's the most sharp, tight, complex and amazingly arranged Funk you'll ever hear in your life.

Slick Rick! I know James Brown was more important, influential etc, but Rick James' songs and production skills just do it for me.

Picaso was trained to paint in a tradtional manner and needed those fine skills later when he went into abstraction. James and his much rehearsed band did something like that when they played live - they needed that rehearsal to follow James into his abstractions. Just one of the many things that set James Brown as the Godfather.

Rick was contemporary music for me and mine, so I am a bit impartial - Stone City Band was on point. As Teena said, "it was a wall of sound. The young Gs is still tryin' to recreate it." Rick picked up James' torch, for a time, and did shit with it, and was really very respectful of James Brown. From the rare moment that they shared the stage in some JB tribute years back it seemed as though James felt that love and respect and appreciated it.

Love both Rick and James. For the record most all funk bands in the 70's were horn based

before going to the more synthesized funk of the 80's. It was just a sign of the times. That

casio keyboard is the one most artists of today are using. If your ears can stand it just go

to Youtube and look up some Omarion songs. lol

Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint
