Willie Nelson Appreciation Thread

I recently downloaded "Phases and Stages", his album about divorce, and it's just soooo good.

It got me thinking about how great this guy is:

Songwriter, Singer, GUITAR PLAYER (seriously, he's a great picker)

The only downside is he's got more albums than anyone, one a year (at least) since the early seventies. Which leads me to this threa:

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE WILLIE NELSON ALBUM/SONG!?!?!?!

My fav albums are: Shotgun Willie, Red Haired Stranger, Teatro, The Rainbow Connection (seriously, it's an album of kids songs, and it's beyond great)

Songs: I gotta get drunk, Whiskey River, Angel Flying too Close, Sad Songs and Waltzes.

How about you guys!?!?!?!?!?

I wonder how the duet with Julio Iglesias came about.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Willie is the man!

I've seen him in concert 3 times... last time june of this year. He always brings the house down.

I agree he's a fenomenal guitar player, really underappreciated as such.

favorite albums:

1. red headed stranger

2. stardust (beautiful renditions of jazz standards)

3. City of New Orealns (title track alone, but a lot of other great moments incl a MJ cover of "she's out of my life"

4. Always on my mind

5. anything with waylon Jennings, the highwaymen albums

best songs:

1. City of New Orleans

2. Pancho and lefty

3. on the road again

4. blue eyes crying in the rain

5. Me and Paul

6. If you got the money

7. Hello Walls

8. Crazy

9. night life

10. funny how time slips away

also love the 'storytellers' cd with Johnny Cash, great connection between these two giants on stage. For those who haven't really explored the opus of work Willie has produced over the years. Get to it, Johnny is gone, Waylon is gone, ... he's past seventy already. Don't wait till he's gone to discover this giant in american music.

It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

I LOVE his version of "Texas Flood" originally done by Stevie Ray Vaughn and of course, there's a little nugget a la the first single from his "Tougher than Leather" CD (1983) called "Little Old Fashioned Karma," which has a bangin'-ass honkey tonk piano solo by his sister, Bobbie. Amazing little foot-stompin', handclappin' country jam. biggrin

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Been listening to his "Country Music" CD for the past several weeks now, and I really like it. Funny thing about Country music; the songs really have lyrics that speak to unusual situations. I really like all the songs on this CD, but the one that speaks to me the loudest is "Gotta Walk Alone". Again, the lyrics blow me away - and they're so simple. I guess that's the beauty of Country music. This is a great CD.

"Are You Sure" is my favorite Willie Nelson song. It is a simple song but the lyrics are very poignant, especially if you know or have known any hardcore alcoholics.
