Jay-Z: "Today's Hip-Hop Lacks Emotion"

October 2010

Jay-Z has criticized modern hip-hop music for lacking emotion.

The 'Empire State Of Mind' star, whose first commercial release was 14 years ago, said that the current crop of urban artists do not express their honest opinions and have become too concerned with commercial success.

"We have to find our way back to true emotion. This is going to sound so sappy, but love is the only thing that stands the test of time," he told MTV.

"The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill was all about love. Andre 3000, The Love Below. Even NWA, at its core, that was about love for a neighbourhood.

"We're chasing a lot of sounds now, but I'm not hearing anyone's real voice. The emotion of where you are in your life. The mortgage scandal. People losing their jobs. I want to hear about that."

Unholyalliance

I assume that this was a self-criticism on Jay Z's part as well. =/

And that's exactly why I was bored2 because MOST of his famous material has been about "money, cash, hoes" so he's the last one to talk about "music lacking emotion".

Today's hip-hop also lack moral values. And Illuminati-puppets like Jay-Z would know this all too well.

...and he would know about that, wouldn't he?

Last time I checked 99.9% of Jay-Z's songs continue to be about himself - among other nonsense.

Love of fellatio was quite a common theme, too, as I recall.

Today's hip-hop lacks one thing.

Intelligence.

Listen to MCs of all stripes during its Golden Age(s). No matter what the subject, they were articulate, and fully capable of speaking in complete sentences, no matter what their subject matter was. Today's group of mishmouths can't be trusted to put together one sentence. Artist license is one thing. Artist illiteracy is quite another.

As D.O.C. once called it, Rhythmic American Poetry depends on people who can express themselves clearly or at least creatively. These new cats can't do it.

I agree with all of you, including Jay-Z. lol

Please don't try to sugarcoat NWA's music by saying that it has an underlying message of unity

They are largely responsible for the thug attitude in rap music. (Funny, because they are all phonies who never lived the lifestyle they promoted)

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

am I the only person who thinks Eazy E's squeaky ass voice was mega annoying?

I never felt anyone in NWA until they broke up!

Dre's production is sick and Ice Cube is just the man!!!

It is not just Jay's lyrics & subject matter that lack emotion. It's his performance style. I have always thought he sounded bored with his own music.

I think he's intelligent, and a decent rapper, but could never get into his music for the exact reason he is stating.

Now that Jay-Z can afford to jump off the bandwagon he's doing it quickly!

He and Biggie endorsed the "money, hoes & clothes' rap style to get that paper and go mainstream!

All the videos featured models and mansions and pimped out rides!

Now it's all about boycotting Cristal and the "death of autotune" and now this crap he's spewing.

The minute he decides something is no longer cool he proclaims the hip hop industry should follow suit!

He's the biggest hypocrite in hip hop. At least these young dudes admit they just money hungry and trying to get some ass out of the stardom!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I'm a fan (not a hardcore one) but he's full of crap. He says these things and the younger rappers will listen believe it or not.

It also lacks originality and danceable beats too!

Like babybugz said, they'd probably listen to him. They ain't got no brain cells either. Jay-Z is indeed a hypocrite.

Wasn't he in charge of a record company and finding hip hop artists that have what he's looking for, or was he that awestruck by Beyonce's butt and living the "big pimpin'" jetset life that he lost focus? Or too busy with licensing "Empire State of Mind" with the Yankees and racetracks?

It's out there. He doesn't have his ear to the street anymore, or going incognito to packed clubs hearing new talent. I'm assuming when he plays festivals he's out there watching to hear what's out there, but might just be in and out with the check once the show's done, or sharing the stage with Bono and a Beatle...

You mean that you didn't like NWA's classics like F*** Tha Police, Straight Outta Compton, or Gangsta Gangsta?
