I gave up wishing that Britney would disappear after the head shaving episode. I just make it a point to reference her whenever a debate about the state of the music business arises. She still doesn't write, produce, or play instruments on her songs and she hasn't sang live during her concerts since her first album. It's hard to crucify any artist out now because Britney is still a success in the music industry and most new artists actually do more on their albums than she does. Hopefully, she does something more on this album than just warble into the microphone as the producers alter her vocals so she can actually earn that 'icon' title. Staying in the public eye for 10 years, does not necessarily mean you deserve being dubbed an icon. All just my
well great points there but lets think about it for a moment, today or at least since the later 90's maybe earlier, to me its when the focus became WEEK 1 sales, and "getting to the dome" was the motto. Its been all about becoming "icons", lets look at the way the whole reality shit grew and grew and grew and there are people that still think its really "reality" and not scripted, shit i knew it was all fake when the Real world was doing it. But the focus now is do what it takes to keep you in the public eye, we have ALOT of "stain glass Icons" now, meaning, totally see-through. ICON is a played out term, like COMEBACK and ARTIST is. But its the times we live in because we want it now, not tomorrow, we dont want to sacrifice or wait or this or that, i mean look at this election that just past....how quick the "change" generation went to bed and we are back we were at again, and a president that goes on the air and apologizes to other side? WTF? Now Britney is a small piece in this puzzle, her credentials as an "artist" can be debated all over the place, not singing live, not writing, well that she actually does, but thats not really the point. Todays ICONS are built like a model, and im not talking about a "model" im talking about a blueprint, look at Rihanna, now nothing against her, cute girl, great body, some catchy songs here and there, but useless in the picture of music, to me at least, because it was easy to create her and now someone else is coming in that mold to take her spot, just like Nicki Minaj is the Black Gaga etc..
As for ICON is a throwaway word, its used way too much, but it really means nothing, i mean Kim Kardashian is an ICON, she really is, thats not a joke, by definition she has exceeded it. I litterally saw her and her family on 20 covers in a 7/11, i mean every freaking cover, and its been this way for years now, so Britney, to me at least did a BIT more leg-work (no pun intended) than Kim or Snooki or The Hills Girls etc...
I agree with you on several points, especially the 'Icon' part. We need to distinguish that there are legendary icons and there are pop culture icons. Britney really didn't offer anything new to the music world so she's a pop culture icon. She's really no different from McDonald's, Mickey Mouse, or Coca-cola. Sure, everybody in the world knows what these things are, but that doesn't make them special, great, or important. It just means they exist in the minds of the vast majority therefore cementing themselves into the history books. Anything that is marketed well and excessively has the potential of being a pop culture icon in this day and age. That's just smart business.
Kim Kardashian is a reality TV star who has turned her image and name into a brand. Britney has done the same. The only difference is that Britney is actually famous for making music (or singing music that was made for her) and Kim is famous for having sex with Ray J and being Paris Hilton's former BFF. The fact that she was able to parlay those two things into the success she has now is actually more impressive than Britney's story. She did less work and is just as widely known as Ms. Spears and she didn't have to work very hard to get to this point. Don't work hard; work smart and that's what Kim K did so more power to her for having such a smart hustle.
At one point, Britney was on the cover of every magazine for her erratic behavior and she wasn't really doing anything musically productive during that phase...I don't count 'Blackout' because we all know that she phoned that in and the producers did everything else. That album still sold without her doing any real promotion for it because her name is a brand and that's all they needed to sell her stuff to her fans. She's the tool they use to put their music out to the masses...it's been like that since her first album which is why I'll never be able to call her a legend or a true icon. She's pop culture personified and like I said originally, 10 years in the public eye does not mean you deserve to be called an icon. As Andy Warhol famously stated: 'In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.' The man forsaw reality TV before it was even relevant. Britney is still just an image with a good soundtrack and until she takes the initiative to put in more work on her albums that's all I'll ever see her as.
