New Elvis Album Features Hip Hop Remixes

October 2010

A number of Elvis Presley songs that have been given the hip-hop remix treatment will be released on November 9.

The album, which is called Viva Elvis: The Album, is being prepared by Cirque du Soleil music director Erich van Tourneau (who has directed the company's Viva Elvis show) in collaboration with Legacy Records. Songs from both the hip-hop and punk genres will be used in the remixes.

Legacy Records media relations VP Tom Cording has noted that various criticisms and complaints about altering Presley's music from fans and purists have arisen, and replied to these concerns by explaining: "I can understand why the purist may be cautious and hesitant, but the new album is a unique way to bring Elvis' music to a whole new, younger audience."

The music of Elvis Presley has previously been derided by various hip-hop and rap artists, including Chuck D, who noted that Presley and his music "never meant s--- to me."

The first single, "Suspicious Minds," was released on Monday.

Now I know why people have a disdain for hip-hop now.

Because of shit like this.

Leave the classics alone!

They've released Elvis remixes before like A Little Less Conversation and Rubberneckin'. This isn't much different than those remix albums of old songs that Motown & Verve Records release. There's an audience for this I guess or they wouldn't keep releasing them. I like this remix though, lol.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Actually, Chuck D has amended this statement several times, clarifying that what he was complaining about was how Elvis was "pushed" ahead of Black artists who were doing similar things, and his place in the American culture. Chuck has said that Elvis was a "brilliant artist", and did not mean to attack his talent, only his cultural significance

This is just another chance to rape from his catalog. I can see how people feel about what they're doing with you-know-who's estate because this is just ridiculous. lol
