Yes, surprised at how broad Janet's appeal is lol Don't even act like black people are the only ones that know her hits. Songs like Rhythm Nation, Together Again, That's The Way Love Goes, All for You, etc. Are all well-known Pop/R&B classics.

actually you be surprised how ignorant many people are to janet's music. like i said the people at my work didn't know anything about janet except for the superbowl.... lol lol

people from an older generation were fans of janet... the younger generation that takes any interest in janet are black.

out of the small amount of support for the flop albums.. the urban charts/ media gave more support for it.

to SeanMan... even with janet's songs being considered "Pop" they are still rnb influenced.. there is such a thing is urban pop...???

janet's pop music compared to britney or lady gaga's pop music IS ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL.. and just urban....

No. You are generalizing because Janet is black and Gaga and Britney are white. You aren't going to tell me that Doesn't Really Matter, All For You, Escapade and Black Cat are urban. It's simply not so. Hell, there are plenty of Janet songs that never saw the light of day as singles that are pop and pop ONLY.

"Come Give Your Love to Me" from Janet Jackson isn't what you would call an R&B song either. lol It's a pop/rock, dance song (that should've done better than it did). I love that joint. mushy

Then they must not know Pop/R&B music at all. lol

Um no. confused The younger generation fans aren't just black. You can't be this ignorant.

That's what happens when you release music to cater to the Urban charts lol BTW, Feedback actually did better on the Hot 100 than R&B charts.

Feedback, rockwitchu, make me, just a little while, call on me... are JUST as pop as her control album, rhythm nation songs... JANET Never stop making dance urban pop.... actually her new music is just like the old music.... she has done a little more hip hop... than normal... but she had hip hop influenced tracks on the janet and velvet rope album....

did you just say janet stop making pop songs.. so by what you said.. then janet's young fan base should be black lol lol

EXACTLY feed back did better on the rnb charts.. because black radio/media SUPPORTS HER STUFF THE MOST... so thanks for proving what i said right.....

and yes most of the young janet jackson fans are black....

Sean Come on Man.... lol lol lol im NOT generalizing... BUT janet's music is very different from gaga, and britney... and they are considered POP MUSIC.... janet's pop music always had an rnb, funk, soul influence... and URBAN POP sound....

it has NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE... even when madonna started she her first songs were Urban pop songs... Holiday is definitly an rnb influenced pop song.....

britney spears has even done urban pop songs before... BUT majority of her songs aren't...

You said that Janet's pop songs are urban. That is incorrect. When Janet does a pop song, it is strictly pop and that's it. The songs that I named have no "urban" in them at all.

Yes! The synths in that track are bananas! "CGYLTM" and "Don't Stand Another Chance" are probably my favorite early Janet dance tracks.

Well if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black (no pun intended). I can see that either logic and reason aren't your strong suits, or you're a troll. Either way, this conversation is slowly becoming tiresome. Anyone in their right mind knows a POP/R&B song VS a strictly POP song (Mary J's "Family Affair" would be a good example of a POP/R&B track and "Escapade" is a good example of POP). "Rock With U" is strictly dance/pop/house. "All Nite" is Europop. "Throb" is straight-up House. "Black Cat" is rock. But, since you can't seem to grasp the concept, my explaining it to you is kind of futile at this point.

talk to the hand EXCUSE ME... i been at this org since 2004..... and well known by members on here...

TROLL... I DON'T THINK SO... opinionated.... YES.....

i can see you don't have logic ..... if your a janet jackson fan.. and you know her work... she has spand all generes... BUT her songs are very funk, rnb influence.. all nite is so HIP HOP....

The song contains a sample of Herbie Hancock's 1975 song "Hang up Your Hang Ups" lol lol lol lol

you make things too easy..... JANET loves disco, funk, rnb, and most of her songs reflect that.... which is why im a fan.. cause i like that type of music... IF she did the euro pop music like lady gaga and madonna i would NOT be a fan....... lol lol lol

NO one said janet doesn't have any songs that aren't rnb or hip hop.... i was saying that most of her stuff is...

janet is a jackson.... so she was influenced by disco, soul, funk, rnb... because of her brothers...

you all just like to make up things.. NO one her music is that way because she is black....

her music reflects what her tastes are... and thats why it sounds GREAT...

all i can say is janet has and i have a similar ear for music.... cause i pretty much enjoy most of her songs... lol lol

Well I agree that her musical tastes vary greatly, and it's reflected in her own music, but I do not agree that "All Nite" is Hip Hop. No way. "So Excited", yes, but not "All Nite". True, it has a Herbie Hancock sample, but it was produced by the Swedish production team of BAG & Arnthor, and they definately gave it their signature Europop sound.

Exactly! lol

Idk why some on here are having a hard time believing this but Janet is hardly considered urban nor is it her base. Her sound varies and so does her audience but her core will always be Pop and her sales reflect this. Her whole image is solidified in pop culture. I wouldn't consider her urban. Someone like Mariah Carey is considered Urban, not Janet.

New article: Janet Jackson makes something out of 'Nothing'

Janet Jackson's hit single "Nothing" — the theme song from Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married Too?" — is generating almost as much Oscar buzz as it feels riddled with grief. Jackson learned of her brother Michael's death while filming the movie in Atlanta, before she had recorded the song.

Even though Jackson says "Nothing" is not about her brother, whom she won't talk about much these days, the song's melancholy and emotional grit leads one to wonder. It's no stretch to think that Jackson, who's known for having a particularly strong work ethic and occasionally losing herself in creative projects during turbulent times, was channeling the fallout of her personal tragedy into her music.

Which may be why "Nothing," her third film song to date, is resonating so deeply with fans. The song went straight to No. 4 on iTunes when it was released in March. After her appearance on the finale of "American Idol," where she performed a medley that included "Nothing" on live TV, the single shot to No. 1. The song is now featured on Jackson's recent album "Icons," which showcases 11 of her 35 hit singles throughout the years. It's a touching, melodic ballad about truth, trust and relationships.

"Even though it sounds like a sad song, it's hopeful" says Jackson, nestled on a velvety brown couch in a suite at the Four Seasons Hotel. She leans in close, like a girlfriend sharing a secret, her voice urgent but still soft. "When you really listen to it, it's really hopeful. I didn't know if I wanted to call the song 'Trust in Me' or 'Nothing.' It's really about the characters [in the movie] and pulling as much as I could from each relationship."

Fresh off a junket for another, more recent Tyler Perry movie, "For Colored Girls," in which she stars, Jackson is surprisingly relaxed. She's dressed comfortably but still stylishly, with an angular buzz cut and wearing a sleek, black leather jacket. At 44, she is perhaps a bit reflective; "Icons," and especially her earlier 2009 release, the double-disc album "Number Ones," together collect nearly all of her 35 hit singles spanning more than two decades, from 1986 to 2010. It's a musical prism of sense memories for her.

"I never kept a journal — my albums were my journals," she says. Still, Jackson has listened to the albums only one time each. "I don't normally go back and listen to my music unless I'm working on a project or it's a tour. But it made me really smile and reminisce a great deal, so it was nice."

There's more reminiscing, this time tapping into earlier, childhood memories, in her first book, "True You," which is due out from Karen Hunter Publishing/Simon & Shuster on Feb. 8. Having struggled with weight and body issues over the years, the book is Jackson's attempt to help readers learn from her experiences. Broadly aimed at women, men and teens, it combines diet and exercise advice with personal tidbits from her life.

"It's a self help book, not an autobiography," she says. "There are anecdotes stemming from my childhood until today. It's just my stories. I also have stories from fans who have let me in there as well, so maybe they can relate and know they are not alone."

As if film junkets and book tours weren't enough on her plate, Jackson is also preparing to embark on her biggest world tour yet — 35 cities to celebrate 35 hit singles — and, for the first time, she'll be appearing exclusively at smaller, intimate venues chosen by fans who have voted on her website, janetjackson.com. On tour, which is expected to start in January, Jackson will perform only her No. 1 hits, including "Nasty," "Control" and, of course, "Nothing," which she co-wrote with Johntá Austin, Bryan- Michael Cox and her ex-boyfriend of seven years, Jermaine Dupri.

"I did a performance in New York not that long ago at Radio City [Music Hall], a private performance, and it was really, really intimate. And I had so much fun," she says. "I said, This is it. This would be the way to go. Really be able to be up close. And to let the fans choose where they want me to go. And the response has been crazy." Jackson says the votes have been pouring in, from as far afield as Singapore and Hong Kong.

Next up, time permitting, is a new album to work on during 2011. "I'll just have to fit it in while on tour," she says, stressing that her new project will not be looking backward or forward. Instead, she plans to stay in the moment.

"No rush, no deadlines, just create, see what I'm feeling, see where the music goes," she says. "I want to see where I am in my life at that moment."

This is good to hear from her. I'm glad she won't have the pressure or demands from a label interfering with the creative process. I've always felt that Janet had/has generally good instincts when it comes to her music. BUT due to her insecurities she's always seemed to have given in to the counsel of those around her.

This is true. It was her decision to release "That's the Way Love Goes" as the first single off the janet. album, and we know how that worked out.
