Kathy Ireland (famous former model, actress, entrepreneur, CEO and designer of her eponymous brand product marketing company, Kathy Ireland Worldwide) interviewed Ms. Janet about her latest movie "For Colored Girls". Kathy is also a very close friend to Elizabeth Taylor and supposed goddaughter of her.

Well, quite to the contrary... it wasn't a problem of being too long, rather than being a problem of being too early! Same outcome though. She did successfully tour in Europe in '95 (after only a extremely limited run of european dates 5 years earlier), then she was here very successfully again in '98 and then she was supposed to come back again in 2001, just 3 years later... but this time with ticket prices almost twice as high as on the previous tour (in those years there was a crazy spike in ticket prices)... so her (relatively) frequent touring over here, coupled with high ticket prices and no mentionable hit most likely broke her neck on the AFY tour in Europe (even though I doubt that it was so bad, that she would have lost money)... so 9/11 (in her mind) was the perfect excuse to get out of that tour! Everyone else saw it for what it is though... especially when she extended the US tour and went to Japan and Hawaii instead. What she didn't realize is, that with that move she also pissed off the remaining european people, who still were buying her tickets. Careerwise she's pretty much dead ever since in Europe!

I just don't get why she never had a meteoric rise to superstardom in Europe to begin with. With her impressive catalogue of dance hits, legendary music videos and ever-evolving image, you would think she'd be really huge over there. "Get up off that grey line"

^^Well, she was always big in the UK, bigger than in the rest of Europe, I'd say! Also I think her audience is mainly african-american folks... her style of music is more in a niche and not as broad and open pop music as say Madonna... she never really got that crossover effect over here! I'd say she was on a good way with the Janet album... but by the time Velvet Rope came along that was basically over. Mariah Carey has the same problem... she never became as big in Europe as she is in the US... I'd also say that her biggest market here is the UK. Also it probably didn't help Janet being seen as Michael's little sister and occasionally, by people who follow things not that closely, getting mixed up with Michael's crazy sister. LOL u mean Latoya. I think it's unfortunate that she's pigeonheld to one specific audience over there, because, even though a lot of her music is R&B, she is still a Pop artist. "Get up off that grey line"

This is not true. | |

Right. Like I said, Janet is a POP artist, and she has been from day one. It's easy to say she has a mostly black fanbase because she's black, but in Janet's case, that's simply not true. Now, someone like Mary J. Blige, for instance, is a good example of a popular contemporary female singer who more than likely has a predominantly Black fanbase. "Get up off that grey line"

Hmm, yeah... I agree that in that regard she is not quite a Mary J Blige... I guess, what I meant to say is, that a black audience is more likely to embrace her and stay with her and that she has bigger success in countries, which have a big african-american or well, colored population... like the US and the UK! In predominantly white countries she's not as much and easily embraced like, say, Madonna!
