Yeah Badu! She basically said what many of her peer group of "musicians" feel! What does her age have to do with it? Wack is wack. Period. Mainstream Artists these days are making wack music. No one is pushing the boundarier. Okay she did one song w/Lil Wayne...that doesn't diminish her other creditable tunes? Hell Prince had Tony M. ! MJ did a tune w/Eddie Murphy?! Bottom line is she has a very valid point. I'm sure younger people find it hard to accept that "their" generation of choosen stars are overrated, overhyped and lack sustainable talent.

Gravy & then some,,,,,,,to all of what you said. Believe me, I agree 100%.
BUT, does she have the power to contribute a solution to the problem or not?
See, me & you can shoot the shit till the cows come back home because we have nothing to contribute except financially support the music that we want, but she doesn't have to, she's capable of changing the direction of music if she wants to. She can haul her ass back to the studio and keep releasing new stuff(within a short time, like her peers and musical heros used to do), or break out the unreleased stuff(like the Edith Funker project) but does she do that? NOOOOOOO, there won't be no time to twitter,,,,,god forbids.

I would have thought she would be too busy feeding her kids and buying wigs to piss about on twatter every day.

but as 4 that last line in E.B.'s post
reminds me of her open letter 2 okayplayer man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I'm 20 and agree with you 110% Although there is good music in the underground/indie scene (whatever you want to call it), there aren't any masterpieces or anything groundbreaking my generation is doing; at least that I know of.

god i wish the bitch wouldn't speak sometimes i actually find her last comment a bit homophobic i mean i get it and totally know what she saying but 1) no one music type should be 100% racialized and 2) yeah, some gay men obvs have had both and prefer asshole. im surprised no one else found that kind of...eh, i dunno i wish she'd just make music and shut up a lot of the time. not that i don't totally want to stalk her and be her best friend. but she comes across so much more interesting, innovative and intelligent via her music and lyrics and live stage show (and videos too). I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Actually, you know what's even more heterosexist is the idea that if gay men don't have insertive anal intercourse, then then they didn't have sex.

Lord I totally missed that. Now I'm thinking someone spiked Erykah's incense with some bad weed because she's crazy for that shit.

Some of you are crazy. Erykah is a true fucking artist. I was lucky enough to see her in concert earlier in the year and she was one of the best acts i've ever seen. Truly great.
So what Erykah did a song with Lil Wayne? Is the song sell out nonsense? No it's fuckin moody brilliance - http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=related
Shit, Prince did how many songs with Tony M (?) "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

No I can admit that. About the music, she does have a point but then again, can she help change that? I mean, as an artist, she has the power to do that. And surely that'll be more energy than ranting about it on Twitter. Hell she ain't saying nothing new anyway, we say this shit all the time HERE.

She cracks me UP! She's got a valid point, but the longer people continue 2 buy it, the longer the trend will live. This happened when Neo-Soul was the big thing. Then came the Hip Hop-infused, radio-friendlier Hip Hop tunes and now it's the House/Techno (ish) stuff with Rap featured in it. It all recycles into each other. Eventually, I wouldn't doubt it if Disco (in its original form) didn't come through again. Hard to say. It's all in what people like. Other than on little rinky-dink AM R&B radio stations, I seriously doubt one would have heard Badu or Scott (Jill) on the (major) airwaves. Could be wrong tho. Up in Boston, no way; only AM-1090 W.I.L.D. was playin' 'em. Up here in Portland, ME, it's on FM (105.1 W.J.Z.P.), but it's only a small local station with hardly any funding from the community. North of Portland, R&B is virtually unheard of. It's all C&W. [Edited 10/25/10 16:16pm] Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

LOL. As Cinnie cited, if one of the biggest rnb stars of today is making euro sounding songs like the catchy "DJ's got us falling in love again", then a change is definately happen. I guess I welcome it but then, europe and the UK has been doing this sorta stuff for a few years now. Iam surprised brit boyband JLS havn't made inroads in America.
Kelly Rowland I think has been doing almost exclusively doing euro "techno" sounding for years now hasn't she?
So yeah Erykah does have a valid point, but Iam not sure what she is exactly getting at though? I think she thinks black rnb/rap artists are doing white euro techno and she states at first this was a good thing ("Pimpin' the system" as she calls it). Again Iam not sure what she was getting at here? Black rap artists getting some white "euro/techno" money? Who knows LOL.

I'm 23 and I agree with her in alot of ways but there is a generation gap I feel because I see nothing wrong with black artists doing pop music. I don't think nothing of it you want that pop money for a little bit go right ahead lol.

Sounds like they took 777 and mixed it with Take Your Time by the S.O.S. Band. I guess originality is out of the question, too. Nice try, though.

The "Techno" of today = is based on "House" which is based on "Disco.."
Kraftwerk is more...Trance-like.
It's all in a mixture of today's Techno, but the "loose beat" that is in Techno that makes Europeans dance is from Disco which came from Black Church beats in the South.
I've noticed that even some 80's New Wave disco techno is based form disco like "Right round", and other songs..
My brother was a strong Kraftwerk fan years after they released their hits, I've listened to them aside from the dressediup Hiphop samples..
Their beats were "stiff", with little delay...or funk... Now, one can say that the farther that European techno drifts-away form its House or Disco routes, the less "loose" and danceable the beat will become (even with black "Hip-pop" producers who never grew-up with disco and funk music in thier ears).
Kraftwek were innovators with the technologic side of things, but their beats were for the New Wave techno punk scene, and not for what techno is used now.. They never intended any of their beats to be funky, or so danceable. It is like "performance art" to them.
They will take the royalty checks from the HipHoppers though..gladly.

Prince, Erykah.... and anyone elsewho has to comment about "modern production" need to listen to the facts:
(Supposedly Prince and Erykah are friends..)
Prince was futuristic sounding with the Linn LM-1 and synths. Roger and Zapp and others were doing the same thing by that time, but he infused the "Techno" of the time into his music-whether out of convience or not.. And he rode that sound all the way to about 50 Million albums sound. When he drops that sound, people really wasn't into his new stuff.. It kind of trapped him a bit. He's made some good music without that drum machine and other effects, but the average person doesn't care about it.
Nobody opened a school for these producers. Nobody invested $1 million to buy "real instruments" for "Real musicology". Nobdy built rehearsal halls (even in theri own hometowns), so anyone could perform and rehearse "real music".
Sometimes, through selfishness, you just built your own trap.
Nobody remains "on top" forever.. Here, people grow tired of you because you are "on-top"!
Techno sound is winning because the music industry has been tied to clubs all over the World. There is nothing wrong with slow, and soulful "mood-music", or little mid-tempo hand-clapper songs, but people want to move to a steady beat. That will change again. Poeple are fickle.
Europeans are probably purchasing more single downloads and (still) CDs than American whites and others.. These producers, rappers, and bosses are going where the money is..
Somewhere, there is a broke Neo-Soul artists who are sticking to what they do (especially here in Atlanta), some perfrom in Europe, but most without connections are struggling because their "big-brothers and sisters" talk about the "lack of integrity of (black) music", but won't lend a hand (like one was extended to them).
