Some explanation for the strange guest verse down below...

hmm WTF X1000!? 1/3 offensive, 1/3 ridiculous, 1/3 awesome. Something tells me this albums is going to sell like crazy when it's finally released.

Right? That's where most of my "wtf?" came from. Weird.

There's a huge hype surrounding them. Ever since their appearance at Coachella. They're like, working with big time producers and shit, too. I don't get it. lol They're from Cape Town, South Africa - so I understand there may be a cultural difference. But I'm thinkin' the middle part of this track probably lost them some fans. That guy, whose name is Wanga evidently, isn't even part of the group - just the tattooed white guy and freaky ass girl are. lol

lol They're so bizarrely different that I was actually marginally interested until this Wanga mess. A lot of my interest was just Yolandi, though. She's, uhh, intriguing. lol

"Seriously, like, gangsta skill on the mic..." lol

Bump all the way from Page 5

They're touring Canada and the states for the next few weeks here. Detroit on the 23rd, I think Chicago the night before.

**** spoilers *****

They are not exactly a genuine article! The best anaolgy would be The Lonely Island "I'm On a Boat!"/ SNL "Dick in a Box" ish, mixed with Spinal Tap and Tenacious D. All stirred in the world of hip hop, from the New Wave up to the Euro drum and bass raves.

They have at least 4 songs that I listen to on REGULAR rotation. The sound, the beats, the weirdness... and I'm also very taken by Yolandi's swaggar. For them to get SO into character, it's generating great payoffs in their videos and music. I hope they back it up live and in person!

Usually when people parody something, they don't really do a good job with the actual content. Sacrificing art for comedy.

But compare these guys to NWA (it's a huge strech, I know!). When NWA came out, they were as hardcore gangsta as you could get at the time. But were any of these guys actually rollin through Compton doing drive-bys and throwing beat downs on people for $20 so they could get some liqour? Well... maybe Easy E did *lol*. So again, we have a group that is dressed up and representing the other side of the tracks of South Africa. Where cultures are blending. This group is acknowledging that, and to an extent going a great job of representing it! It almost has an innocent about it that transcends cultures. The plot is that these people really believe in their art, are influenced by MANY different sources, and want to have fun doing it. A contrast to the usual view of the Afrikaner in the media of hoighty toighty whites looking down and wanting little to do with native African culture.

It's a damn nice vision. It's what was endearing about Napoleon Dynamite, if you think about it. I can't imagine that the artists could be aware that they were capable of such immersion, but they are going a great job at it. And ultimately, I'm VERY drawn to the beats and the whole image of Yolandi.

Now, at first I was like "wat". But when I saw a few videos and realized that "DJ Hi Tek" was different in every video, I figured it was something like Spinal Tap. But when I saw Wat Pomp and heard Yolandi spit, I was like WHOA. It's not Missy Elliot, but she has a steelo that grips me "like two bollocks in a nice warm palm"

Never said otherwise. I've always been aware the guy was an art student, or in the arts scene somehow. Regardless, those silly tattoos are forever. And that Wanga verse in the middle of the new song is still offensive.

There is no comparing these guys to NWA. None. Zero. They don't even exist in the same universe. If you think otherwise read some books or watch some documentaries about NWA, Compton, South Central LA and the time they came from. Again, no comparisons. NWA were speaking truths for real people dealing with real shit. Die Antwoord most definitely are not.

And that's Diplo in the new video. Which surprised me, but then like, two days later I started seeing his new TV comercials for some cell phone or something. I guess dude is boosting his profile.

MC Ren - Dropped out of Brown University

Ice Cube -Another University student before NWA

Dr Dre and DJ Yella - World Class Wrecking Crew. need I say more? http://i54.tinypic.com/25sn3af.jpg

I don't need to watch a documentary to know that they weren't out doing shit. THEY PUT ON AN ACT about what they see in the streets. How is that different than this group, or almost ANY mainstream group for that matter?

There's a reason why I mentioned it would be a stretch, though. I understand what NWA did for hip-hop. I was in middle/high school at the time and rap was a huge influence musically and culturally.

And I get that Cube was writing about the realities of life as a black man. How things hadn't changed for the better and there was oppression all around, from the authorities, from peer pressure, from women, from other black men, etc. Rich people were living the high life from the rebound of the 70s/80s and shit was going down on the streets.

In contrast, Die Antwoord shows that even in one of the most oppressive nations in the world against black people, you're seeing signs of cultural cross over.

So that's on THAT level. The aspect I'm referring to is how you shouldn't simply disregard the message due to the messenger. Just because Ren, Cube, Yella, and Dre weren't straight up gang bangers, doesn't mean the message wasn't poignant! Should I disregard BDP's Criminal Minded (one of my favorite albums of all time) just because they never really had a 9mm go bang? Nah. You suspend disbelief as the artist takes you on a journey. That's why I'm saying, I hope people won't be put off just because Die Antwoord is a production.

Some explanation for the guest verse in the middle of this track. Kind of makes sense in regards to THEIR culture, but won't be understood by most of the rest of the world.

Your video for "Evil Boy" has sparked controversy for heavy phallic imagery and guest rapper Wanga shouting about how he's not gay. (Watch the video below.) What's the back-story on that?
He caused a stir because his verse is about African tribal circumcision. He's under pressure because he's from the ghetto and he had to go to the bush to get circumcised to become a man. [In their culture], you get your penis circumcised with a kitchen knife. No anesthetic, no painkiller. He was supposed to go and we said "maybe you shouldn't go because that sounds really fuckin' dumb" and then we made up the chorus [for "Evil Boy"] together and he kicked that verse. The [tribal members] are like unbelievably homophobic. They're heavy anti-gay. He thought it was quite funny that these grown men want to touch the penis and he said "Don't touch my penis / I'm not a gay." That's very taunting to say to them.

Here's the rest of the interview...
