BEST, WEIRDEST, Trippiest Badu show EVER
I know there's a few of us die hards / lovers in here...
CYPRHESS HILL SMOKEOUT FESTIVAL - October 16, 2010
So, she was scheduled to go on for an hour from 9:15pm -- 10:15pm.
I figured this being a festival and all, she would be 45 min late and only do 5/6 songs. And i had driven my ass 70 miles east to San Bernadino.
I was right on the 45 min late part.
However, she played a healthy 80-90 minutes and it was, out of the tens of shows I've been to, her best!
Rather than feature her regular band with the background singers, flute, etc she had 7 or 8 dudes onstage in "Cannabinoids" T-shirts all with laptops. Plus RC, her musical director, on a computer and synth, and her drummer in the back. The rest was ALL DIGITAL. SUCH an amazing, trippy vibe! She also debuted a handful of NEW tracks which sounded very futuristic, my friend dubbed it "spaceship funk"
Setlist
(that i can remember)
The Healer *New* On & on ... & On (the digital sample background music for this one was TIGHT! think isley brothers in 2050) *New* I Want You (psychedelic guitar solo sampled with new lyrics over it) Umm Hmm (beautifully subtle new arrangement) Soldier That Hump (new arrangement with just the bridge and a recurring chorus of "let the dollar circulate") *New* You Loving Me Otherside of the Game (gorgeous) Danger Bag Lady Didn't Cha Know (snip it) Love (first time hearing live - almost a ca pella - hottt way to end the show!!!)
I may have forgot one or two but you get the gist.
I wonder if this signals a new direction, or if there really is a part 3 that will be all digititized a la part 1!!!!
She seemed in the best place ever and so happy. Not high. No "back in the day (puff)" oddly, even though it was a smoke out fest!
[Edited 10/18/10 12:12pm] I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

The wig and the clothes look horrible.
Sounds interesting. Can´t wait to see her again one day. You got me curious about that digital sound. I liked both parts of New Amerykah but somehow, most of the new stuff sounds very sketchy IMO and it doesn´t really stick in my head like, say, Mama´s Gun or WorldWideUnderground did. New Amerykah I, as great as it is, is an album that I find very dark and I hardly ever put it on, even though I can see the direction she wanted to go.
Can´t wait to hear more music by the great Ms.Badu. No matter how sketchy and weird some of her new music sounds, I always buy anything she releases. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
