4 mins of silence heading for uk xmas number 1

biggrin ....after last year's successful facebook campaign to stop the banal kareoke uk show winner of the 'shit' factor being the xmas num.1 ....rage against the machine sold half a million copies to stop simon cowell's mass market dross heading the chart....the campaign is going again with this year's ' cage against the machine' ...they are trying to get john cage's classic '4.33' to the top of the singles chart.....that is the track where the musicians didnt touch their instruments and there was no vocal.....4.33 of silence !......now if successful... that would be the strangest number one in history smile .....but a vast improved on any x factor winner ....i would love to see it happen...so i will be supporting it....

john Milton Cage Jr. (September 5, 1912 – August 12, 1992) was an American composer, philosopher, poet, music theorist, artist, printmaker and amateur mycologist and mushroom collector. A pioneer of chance music, electronic music and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde. Critics have lauded him as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. He was also instrumental in the development of modern dance, mostly through his association with choreographer Merce Cunningham, who was also Cage's romantic partner for most of their lives.

Cage is perhaps best known for his 1952 composition 4′33″, the three movements of which are performed without a single note being played. The content of the composition is meant to be perceived as the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed, rather than merely as four minutes and thirty three seconds of silence, and the piece became one of the most controversial compositions of the twentieth century. Another famous creation of Cage's is the prepared piano (a piano with its sound altered by placing various objects in the strings), for which he wrote numerous dance-related works and a few concert pieces, the best known of which is Sonatas and Interludes (1946–48)

no-one is going to spend money to buy 4 minutes of silence. if someone wants to make a fuckery of the charts they should get metal machine music or arcweld to number 1 instead. i'd like to hear them play that on radio one

It's certainly a better choice than RATM. And anything that brings more attention to John Cage is a good thing, I suppose. But I've always found this particular concept (I won't call it a piece, because it's not) to be silly and pretentious. "Oh, they don't play anything for 4:33, how amazing?!" Umm, not really. Because anybody could play it, or write it. lol Still, got to be better than Cowell forcing another made up star upon the masses.

It's gonna have some competition from Thom Yorke and his two minutes of silence.

I'm like cool and disbelief at the same time. I guess if the names bring some donations to their cause that's really the point.

think you will be surprised unique...i think it isnt any dafter than rage getting to number one...i can see the pretentious angle of 4.33 of silence but the guy was a genuine artist who did other notable things so its all good....anything to stop these feckin shows thinking they can take over music by being on tv all weekend every weekend....i will happily buy it....then put it on full blast on xmas morning headbang ... lol

lol I dig Cage, even though I'm not a big fan of a lot of his actual music. But his approach to composition and sound design is directly related to a lot of the free jazz and improvised music that followed. And I listen to TONS of that stuff. Can't count the amount of interviews I've read with people who site his prepared piano pieces as the point where they started looking at music in a completely different way. He is important, even if a lot of his music sounds like a cacaphony of nonsense. lol
