Omarion Facing Tax Debt

October 2010

Too bad R&B singer Omarion is a judge, not a contestant, on America's Best Dance Crew, because the show's $100,000 prize could come in handy. He owes $110,585 in federal taxes to the IRS, according to public records.

Omarion, 25, has released three solo albums following a stint as a boy bander in the group B2K.

He appeared in the flick You Got Served in 2004 and, earlier this year, in a California bankruptcy court. He filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in January, but the case was dismissed days later.

What's owed:

  • The IRS filed a $35,210 lien against Omarion on May 18 with the Orange County (Calif.) Recorder of Deeds.
  • The IRS filed a $25,660 lien Oct. 29, 2009, in Orange County.
  • The IRS filed a $49,715 lien Aug. 6, 2009, with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds. He owes income taxes from 2003, 2005 and 2006, according to the lien.

The address on the Orange County liens is his $1.5 million home in Ladera Ranch, Calif., which was featured on an episode of "MTV Cribs."

These celebs and taxes! It's like oil and water, isn't it? I'll never understand how these people just conveniently forget taxes exist, I guess, because their paychecks have 5 digits in them all of a sudden.

For someone who's broke and career-challenged, I still see Omarion rocking the Gucci and Louis Vuttion quite often though...

360 deals may affect how much in debt you are to a label (which is another problem in itself) but that shouldn't affect this situation. Your taxes are going to be related to your income, so everybody should be able to pay those. Actually, nobody is operating off of real disposible income until they pay their taxes and, if it were me, that'd be the first thing I'd get out of the way. You may be bringing home less dough doing the right thing but at least you won't have Uncle Sam on your back and you'll be less likely to head to bankrupcy court.

While the label is definitely taking cuts of everything the artist is involved in, if you have chosen not to pay your taxes yet for years on end and you live outside of your means (probably on a line of credit you can't pay back) with a $1.5 million home (that I bet is mortgaged) - that's nobody's fault but your own. You're losing in two separate playing fields when you don't need to be. And the IRS WILL win their game.

Now I don't know exactly how Omarion got here and I do know the entertainment industry is unpredictable, and that can throw curve balls, but the point is I think celebrities need to do better with managing their funds and getting their priorities straight. They're taking in more money than the average person sees.

I figured that and my response is...well...you don't have to accept rentals. How does fronting like you have money help you pay the bills?

If they label rents the items for them, they should know that it's going to be added to their "tab" just like anything else. Omarion doesn't seem like a dumb person. He should know what his contract grants him, and does not grant.

If they rent the stuff on their own, just as bad.

Either way, artists who aren't in great financial shape like Omarion should cut (i.e. refuse) things they can't afford if its not a gift (which I'm sure most of that stuff isn't).
