In 1973, James Brown, having renamed himself “Godfather of Soul,” was at a crossroads: younger acts, nurtured by his original funk, were on the rise. His hits were not coming so fast; his tours were suffering. He responded with some of the nastiest, longest-lasting funk he’d ever unleashed: “The Payback.” “Same Beat.” “Stoned To The Bone.” “My Thang.” “Funky President,” now a classic sampler’s staple. And much, much more. It’s all documented on The Singles Vol. 9: 1973-1975, the latest entry in the long-running James Brown series from Hip-oSelect.com. The Singles Vol. 9 includes 35 tracks from the prolific JB, featuring not only the hits mentioned above, but singles by tracks he produced and is prominently featured, by Lyn Collins and Fred Wesley & The J.B.’s. The 2-CD set also includes several singles scheduled for release that were not ultimately issued, such as “I Got A Good Thing,” an early prototype of “Stoned To The Bone.” Also on that list is “Let It Be Me,” a duet with Collins reflecting Brown’s fascination with Latin rhythms.
As with the eight previous volumes, the collection includes a thick booklet stuffed with rare photos, reproductions of memorabilia, an essay by former James Brown staffer Alan Leeds, and detailed track annotations.

It’s Christmas Time with the Godfather!
The Complete James Brown Christmas Collection, available on hiposelect.com, is a 2-CD set featuring three original James Brown Christmas albums plus rare bonus singles. While there have been Christmas collections that included some of the these tracks, this release marks the first time each of the albums – Christmas Songs, A Soulful Christmas and Hey America – have been available on CD in full.
Brown’s first Christmas album, Christmas Songs, was released in 1966, a combination of original songs and cool covers, including two versions of the perennial seasonal favorite “The Christmas Song.” A Soulful Christmas, released in 1968, featured the single “Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto” and other funky favorites, as well as the only (at the time) place to get the full-length version of the top 10 hit “Say It Loud – I’m Black And I’m Proud.” Hey America was issued in 1970, with the international-flavored title track, the upbeat “Go Power At Christmas Time” and cult favorite “Santa Claus Is Definitely Here To Stay.”
The seven bonus tracks include the non-LP single “It’s Christmas Time”; alternate single versions of “You Know It” and “Believers Shall Enjoy (Non-Believers Shall Suffer”; and “Sing-Along” (instrumental) versions of “Hey America” and “Santa Claus Is Definitely Here To Stay,” which on this collection will be in stereo for the first time in any format.
Also in the package are an essay, detailed recording information and a bevy of rare photos, memorabilia and reproductions of the original LP cover artwork.

Looking forward to getting it, I've got 'The Payback' album but looking forward to filling those holes in my collection. This has been probably been of the greatest ongoing set of releases ever. I love Hip-O-Select releases, i really do. |

awesome. I need to catch up, though. I'm still only on vol. 6. these aren't really great listening experiences in their own right, but those little extras, like unissued singles, make this so wonderful.
but really, the primary reason to buy these, I think, is Alan Leeds' incredibly detailed liner notes. it's worth buying every volume just to have a complete JB singles discography on hand. | |

Looking forward to the scheduled but unreleased singles and it´s also cool that this is also a JB´s singles collections

I saw vol 3 one time for like $65. I though it was a typo cause that's the year that volume covers, lol.

I'm a bit late on the Christmas collection, I just ordered it, but I did just get my copy of The Singles, Vol. 9 and I am loving it. Before the singles collections started coming out I had a fairly small collection of JB discs (basically Star Time and a few live albums) so these have been a great way to hear some of his lesser known songs. I especially enjoyed discovering many of his neglected '60s ballads and some of the semi obscure covers.
I'm also really happy that the Christmas albums and Live At The Garden have been reissued but it's too bad that Hip-O didn't just decide to reissue everything and go the box set route like they did with Chuck Berry. The singles discs are fabulous and you are getting most of the important songs but there are still a ton of songs that are hard to get, hopefully there will be many more reissues in the future. It's insane that there are so many of James Brown's albums and songs that are out of print. There were some great compilations released in the mid '80s and into the mid '90s and many of them spotlighted different eras and songs but it would be great if everything was available. | |
