BE HONEST: Which orgers like The Funk WITHOUT the disco-influences?

You know exact what the hell I'm talking about. lol

There are those of you that perfer The Funk when it is horn-driven, instead of synth-driven. And this is fair enough.

But there are also some of you that are so anti-disco, as if you figure that disco was a threat to funk as much as disco was a threat to rock, country, jazz, & pop. Never mind the fact that funk AND disco did co-exist at one time.

Now it's time to come out of the closet so to speak and tell me if my theory is right or now.

Discuss. cool

I always loved how Rick's You and I was a bit of a bridge on the trail of r & b/funk and disco. I jumped on that path and didn't really look back, and watched Rick take us to a place that I preferred - Funkytown. The punk-funk title never felt appropriate to me. Rick's funk was fierce and defined, strong and clear. There was not much punk present in the music he references in own material, if you ask me.

I look at funk and disco this way:

Funk is the elder brother, disco is the younger, rebellious brother.

Nothing but love for both.

You don't think funk itself couldn't be rebellious??? hmmm

And if funk is the elder, than Soul must be the father lol

Or Gospel for that matter

No idea what point you are trying to make, but I'm definitely the horny type. I really don't care for dancefloor funk. I'm more for the head-bangin' guitar whiz funk.

Yeah it is. In fact funk rebelled from soul, soul rebelled from rock and roll, rock and roll rebelled from R&B, R&B rebelled from blues, gospel, country and jazz... you know? wink

P-Funk's Flashlight is just as uptempo as Rick's You And I. But no one dares to typecast P-Funk as disco. wink

The closet to disco would probably be:

Parlets

Wolf Tickets, Pleasure Principle, Ridin High

To name a few

But they still had grooves in them dancing jig that's the diff....

Flashlight???...hmmm dunno

That mug was waaaay up there....

The funk part for Rick's You And I was the horns...definitely biggrin

It's the opening rhythm guitar and bongos that feel familial to Disco for me, them building then the layering in of the background vocals ... and then Slick runs away barefoot through a field of funk. As we all know Rick was very smart, and I wouldn't be suprised if this was a feeling that Rick intentionally built into the song to hook a disco listener into his wallet, I mean into his music. (As when he wrote "a little punk funky song for white people to dance to" called Superfreak.) For a long time I have felt You And I to be the Trojan Horse of funk; maybe Erykah Badu needs a You And I of her own to bring today's music back to where she would like it to be.

No daring or typecasting. Brilliant posting with the Flashlight - it doesn't get better than that. I haven't heard it for a long time. I have to do some shopping immediatley.
