The 12" / Remix - An Appreciation Thread Today, Let's celebrate the 12" Single !!
An extended version of your favorite song.
Maybe someone else's interpretation of a song.
An entirely differrent version of a song
A "dub" version
An Acapella version
If were lucky, an extra "KILLER" track that didn't make the album or was recorded later.
Anyway you slice it, the 12" single is the best thing that ever happened to popular music.
Today, Let's celebrate the 12" Single !!
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...nch_single The 12-inch single (often simply called 12") is a type of gramophone record that has a wider groove compared to other types of records. This allows for a wider dynamic range, and thus better sound quality. This record type is commonly used in disco and dance music genres, where DJs use them to play in discos or clubs. They are generally played at 45 rpm, which allows for an improved quality of bass frequencies.
Increasingly in the 1980s, many pop and even rock artists released 12-inch singles that included longer, extended, or remixed versions of the actual track being promoted by the single. These versions were frequently labeled with the parenthetical designation "12-inch version", "12-inch mix", "extended remix", "dance mix", or "club mix".

Nobody else a fan of 12" Mixes?
Loved them in the 80s
There have been lots of collections lately on CD I have got for nostalgic reasons. I only listen to them on the static bike though The 12"/80s series was quite good as is the Disco Discharge now

My favorite is probably the 13 minute 12 Inch version of "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" by The Gap Band with the sirens. Andy is a four letter word.

Can anyone name the first 12" record? "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Yes, Ness does know...lol. He and I talk about this all the time. The first one that was released to the general public, was 10 Percent by Double Exposure. Before that, they were only released as promo's to radio stations. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Wow, my first??? That's really hard to say. I started collecting in the summer of 1978, mostly R&B and Disco was popular. The easier question is when did you get hooked and start collecting??

Oh, I've got one right now that's at least 12 inches and I'm about sick of his ass. The damn thing is so big it looks abnormal and the bastard is a damn pest. He waves that damn thing around like it's gold or something and I've told his ass that huge ass thang don't impress me none so don't think I'll be your fool because of it.
I've never been a size whore anyway. Give me an average size with extreme amounts of hair. Andy is a four letter word.

So much love for that form of media.
I lived for extended play joints as a teen. Spent all my money at Tower Records. ...One of the first that I really was excited over was called "BreakMixer" by Chris "The Glove" Taylor. [Edited 8/19/10 16:17pm]

My first was Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You". There was an awesome extended music video for the 12" remix too. That may be the first time that was done. I dunno.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

why the 12" sounds often louder than the lp : more space

12" singles were AWESOME! I lived for the previously unreleased B-sides and one or two extended remixes of a particular song. They got ridiculous, though, when artists started releasing 5-10 remixes per single, though. There's a point at which there's too much of anything.
I think my first was Irene Cara "Breakdance." Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I love 12" mixes! One of my favorite 12" artists was Guy. Almost every one of their songs from the classic debut has 12" mixes. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

It was the mighty Cameo that got me into the 12'' remix with the extended version of ''I Just Want To Be'' back in '79.
I now own hundreds of well loved 12'' records from the late '70's and 80's (and not just funk/disco stuff) and I still play them regularly.
It's good to hear that there is an appreciation for them to this day.
