I like both versions.

I especially like the slowed down opening of Whitney's version.

Chaka! That's why Whitney put her in the video.

Nobody wanted to see Whitney's pregnant ass. That's why Chaka was in there and Ashford and Pimpson and TLC. Shit she needed all the help she could get.

I hate Whitney's version btw. Chaka owns this song and her video is superior as well.

Nobody should ever cover a Chaka Khan song. You're better off wearing a sign on your head that says " I AM INFERIOR TO CHAKA KHAN AND YOU ALL KNOW IT!"

lol lol

Whitney sings it almost exactly like Chaka. She added nothing to the song.

Yolanda actually sang the part I expected Chaka to sing: "I got! I-I-I-I got it, yeah....I-I-I..."

True, young Whitney sang backing vocals on Chaka's original.... then Chaka returned the favour on Whitney's version.

In answer to the original question: CHAKA

As far as I know, only thing Chaka did was show up on the video to Whitney's version. I don't think she sang backup on Whitney's version lol

Not even close lol

She did a "Blues & Soul" interview back in 1992 where she said "How come the bitch won't sing something original for a change?".

That was prior to the video, I'm guessing her cameo was Nippy's way to make amends, show respect or whatever.

lol I expected that. I almost posted a couple times and then decided to skip it. I dig Chaka (just not this song), but I've never been a Whitney fan. I wasn't really listening to a lot of that kind of music during her heyday.

The really sad thing is the younger generations strongly associate this song more with Nippy than they do with Chaka. The same goes for Mary J's version of "Sweet Thing". I can't stand hearing Chaka sing these songs live anymore but I guess she has to in order to remind folk where these tunes originated from.

Why can't you stand Chaka singing these songs anymore? eek Granted, her voice may be lower than it once was in her prime but she can still sing and does so very well still! So, I'm puzzled by your statement... :scratch head:

Any version of any song by any artist is better than a version by Shitney. Hell, even the old ass original version of "The Star Spangled Banner" from the 1700s or 1800s is better than hers. lol

HEY HEY HEY!

Don't generalize my generation, man. lol

I NEVER in my LIFE will associate "I'm Every Woman" to Nippy. NEVER HAVE, NEVER WILL! Same with "Sweet Thing". It's not Mary J.'s song, it's Chaka's.

FUCK WHAT YOU HEARD!

No, her voice is fine. It's just that whenever she makes a television appearance, she's so predictable. She's either going to sing "IEW" or "Ain't Nobody" or both and she has worn those songs OUT!!! That's why I say I can't stand hearing her sing them. I know these are songs the massess are familiar with but most of her fans who have been following her for years want to hear her sing other songs from her incredibly vast catalog. 27 years of hearing her perform "Ain't Nobody" over and over and over again, it's just grown really old. It's like, "Oh God! Not again!!!" smile

I hear you, bro! But, I can't tell you how many times I've read or heard on shows like American Idol where "IEW" being referred to as Nippy's song.mad I work with a gal in her late 20's and she told me she's heard the name Chaka Khan but she doesn't know any of her songs. I asked her has she every heard of "I'm Every Woman" or "Sweet Thing" and she told me "Yes" and I said, "Well, those are Chaka Khan songs."

That's like Divas 101, man. lol Yeah I knew that around '93 or '94 or somewhere around there. That's when I first heard that Whitney began singing background for the likes of Chaka. Whitney and two other guys (I presume musicians from the session) sung together. Chaka did the rest of the backgrounds (obviously that's just her going I'M EVERY WOMAN at the end). I think Whitney was doing the "whoa-whoa-whoa..." refrains and parts of the original chorus.

I failed this course because I had no idea! boxed lol

me either

I vote for Chaka of course. Although, I give Whitney credit... she is the ONLY one who covered Chaka that I can actually listen to.
