MARVIN GAYE! APPRECIATION...REQUIRED!

I've listened to Marvin Gaye consistently since the 70s but not in a while... What a great talent! What a shame he had to die right after his comeback! What a fine line between the sacred and profane...and what great music that conflict created. Unfortunately, that internal conflict and the outer conflict with his father precipitated his premature demise. neutral Still his musical legacy lives on--and these days some songs like Mercy Mercy Me, Inner City Blues, and Make Me Wanna Holler are as applicable today, unfortunately, as they were when Marvin created them. I just wanna show some love for Marvin tonight while I'm listening, after not for a long time. rose music

WHOOOOOOOO!!!!! When I'm in a pissy mood, I put on Marvin and he makes it all okay. I absolutely LOVE this man, really.

purplethunder, Here, My Dear is one of my favorites, so underrated. That and I Want You are my top top top Marvin Gaye albums and of course What's Going On. I even have Sugar Shack framed in my living room. My first art purchase. It's a print, not an original or anything, but I love it. Makes me feel like a grown up. cool

"can't find no work, can't find no job, my friend... money is tighter than it's ever been... say man I just don't understand what's going on across this land... what's happening brother..." music

Thanks for posting these!

I want to get into him..and i do own Let's Get It On & What's Going On (my favorite), and I seem to like his non single trax more so than some of his singles...I really think he is a great musician and artist.

I recently got into Midnight Love because "Joy" was the Soul Train theme for a while on some of the episodes I found out...looked it up and bam...its on my ipod. I like Rocking After Midnight too....too FUNKY!!!

Last but not least...My Love Is Waiting is HOT!!! 3 cuts that are spectacular. Joy reminds me of "Way Out Love" by Isley Brothers...got that nice funky 808 on it.

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Marvin Gaye, a legend taken from us too soon. But he lives on in the wonderful music that he recorded and performed.

Appreciation Required? Most definitely.

Midnight Love had some SERIOUS beats in it. I was amazed with how many beats were in it. To me it didn't distract from the star of the show - Marvin of course. I loved the funk/reggae/R&B/dance mixture of the entire album. nod

Yeah, I have the complete Anthology also as well as I Want You, What's Going On, and Here, My Dear (which I just bought on CD about 6 months ago--had it on vinyl in the 70s). But I need more! So, I'll take your advice and check Midnight Love out on YouTube. Really feel like digging more into Marvin these days as well as other soul artists from the 70s. I had a bunch of cassettes for years and recently got rid of them--need to replace them with CDs. BTW thanks for turning me on to Light In The Attic Records on your Betty Davis thread--great record company with great efforts at re-mastering and archiving musical treasures. biggrin

I'm gonna look for Loved Starved Heart: Rare and Unreleased. Is that where you can find the unreleased songs that you like? I'm someone who likes to physically own the originals (CD in this cas LOL although vinyl is always better IMO).

Could lyrics be more current, topical, and applicable than these at this moment in time?

What's Happening Brother (Marvin Gaye)

Hey baby, what'cha know good
I'm just gettin' back, but you knew I would
War is hell, when will it end,
When will people start gettin' together again
Are things really gettin' better, like the newspaper said
What else is new my friend, besides what I read
Can't find no work, can't find no job my friend
Money is tighter than it's ever been
Say man, I just don't understand
What's going on across this land
Ah what's happening brother,
Oh ya, what's happening my man
Are they still gettin' down where we used to go and dance
Will our ball club win the pennant,
do you think they have a chance
And tell me friend, how in the world have you been.
Tell me what's out and I want to know what's in.
What's the deal man, what's happening
What's happening brother
Ah what's happening brother
What's happening my man
Ah what's happening brother
What's been shaken up and down the line
I want to know cause I'm slightly behind the time. eek

Yeah you can get that but I also copped the Marvin Gaye Collection (which featured "Party Time", I don't know if "Past Time Love" was on there, I'll check though).

Anybody with any musical sense loves Marvin.

As well as the previous mentioned albums, may i recommend a couple of Duets albums. 'Diana & Marvin' and the simply fab 'The Complete Duets' with Tammi Terrell.

Appreciation?...ok

I can barely stand many of his sticky, corny 60s singles, and if you ask me about his 70s and 80s albums, I only truly enjoy What's Goin' On and Let's Get It On...

but don't get me wrong, his voice is as good as a bottle of old french wine, and the man has more than 20 songs that are clearly timeless classics; but many people keep sayin' that he was an awesome album artist, but...no, I'm sorry but he's not in the same league as Sly, Stevie, Prince or even MJ when he was truly focused. Sorry, get over it.

What's Goin' On, Let's Get It On and a double disc anthology, that's all I need...

Fair enough. 20 'timeless classics' is good for any artist. People not on this board might say the same of Prince, and the other artists you mentioned for that matter.
