Michael got alot of his moves from Bob Fosse, a white guy who was born in 1927 This is a clip of Bob Fosse dancing and singing a number called A snake in the grass, from a 1974 movie called The little Prince. I can't believe how much of this seems like the early 80s Michael jackson. Because of this, the clip's audio is over-layed with michael's Billy Jean.

From Wikipedia.org : Fosse developed a jazz dance style that was immediately recognizable, exuding a stylized, cynical sexuality. Other notable distinctions of his style included the use of turned-in knees, sideways shuffling, and rolled shoulders.

all modern dance/jazz and hip hop owes a HUGE debt to Bob Fosse

Unbelievable. I will say it, MJ is the most overrated entertainer of all time and paved the way for the commercial act. Bob should seriously be given his due....but they like to portray the commercial act today as unique talent to deceive and dumb down. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

Don't be ridiculous, go and do a little research before spouting rubbish. Bob Fosse was very well known, he was an oscar winning director and also won a shedload of awards for his choreography. If that's not being 'given his due' then I don't know what the fuck is. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

What Wikipedia failed to mention was that Bob Fosse also got alot of his dance routines and mannerisms from the schools of Bill Bailey, Marie Bryant, Katherine Dunham, Sammy Davis, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.
Even the aforementioned learned alot and were influenced by the people who preceded them, the point is, they took all of those influences, infused them together and added some of their own individuality to differentiate themselves. MJ & Fosse were no exceptions.
That being said, the videos from Beyonce' "Fierce" album look like carbon copies from "Sweet Charity" I don't mind influences or tributes, but at the very least bring something from yourself to the table,,,,she's bringing to herself more loss than gain, because its only a rerun of the old thing.

This is no big secret. | |

Precisely. Michael wore his unfluences on his sleeve and he wasn't shy about saying exactly who influenced him, and longtime MJ fans know exactly who's who that he admired. Wasn't 'West Side Story' a Fosse choreographed production? The 'Beat It' video and concept is obviously influnced by that.
The 'Commercial' comment is laughable, He came off the production line at Motown, of course he was commercial.
So was any other major pop act from the 80's that sold millions of records and made movies. How much more commercial can an artist get than to stuff millions of CD's free in newspapers on what is becoming a regular occurence?. Honestly, the silly elitist snobbery round here is ridiculous.

All I'm gonna say about this is if you didn't know until now that Bob Fosse played a huge influence on modern day choreographers, then you're just ignorant.
I knew about this since like childhood. @ people thinking they're discovering something new lmao

All these pop stars work with choreographers anyway, so it is no big secret that they are not inventing all of these moves.
MJ was still a great performer My Legacy

Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Joe Tex...
Plus Michael wasn't shy to admit all of these acts played a huge part in his dancing. Michael didn't claim to invent shit lol
Anyway this is about Fosse but he was already recognized by Michael as an influence.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yep....there it is. You have to admire that about MJ. He wasn't too proud to admit and honor his influences.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
THIS. Seriously this is NOT new news and Michael never denied any of his musical or dancing influences. If you knew anything about musical theater you wouldn't have to be running aorund trying to point things out. The Bad video is a direct knock off of Jerome Robbins' West Side Story choreography, and it's STILL A bomb ass video cause NOBODY but MICHAEL JACKSON could pull that off.

Anybody who knows about dancing and Michael's career knows Michael was influenced
Michael was heavily influenced by Fosse, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr, Joe Tex, Jackie Wilson, Fred Astaire, and The Nicholas Brothers and he made it obvious "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

You're shocked by this?

If we wanna get into it, let's talk about the many great dancers

for anyone who knows about dancing, it's not about always about where the move came from, but the execution, the energy put into it..... you can take a move and make it your own
it's about interpretation "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I grew up watching the man. I started dancing because of him and because of that, I've learned about a lot of great dancers. Astaire, Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, Ginger Rogers, and others
and people forget all those dancers respected Michael and gave him props
and you know when someone like Fred Astaire and The Nicholas Brothers think you're good....you're good "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

You aint lying. Even Jeffrey Daniels who taught MJ the backslide which became known as the moonwalk was in awe of MJ. You're doing something right if your own teacher marvels at the way you move.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Michael brought his own style to it. If you look at Bill Bailey's rendition, Jeffery, Boogaloo Shrimp, and Michael's renditions, you see a progression. Boogaloo Shrimp and Michael's interpretations are my favorites. They're fluid, smoother, and faster when they do it "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

MJ was original , he was capable to create things on his own , anyone says the contrary is simply a pressed hater.

The thing is, it's not about "who created this" or "who did it first"
it's more about taking it and bringing your own style to it. That's one of the best things about dancing, it's about execution, energy, and style "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Absolutely
that's one of the keys to MJ's brilliance , how he interpreted his moves ..a true genius.

The Nicholas Brothers were GREAT. Some of the best dancers I've EVER seen. I would've loved to have seen them perform in person.
Have you seen their routine in Gene Kelly and Judy Garland's movie "The Pirate"? That one was awesome too "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
