Earth Tour surely couldnt take that much-440,000 people at an average of £30 odd-doesnt make £20m gross. However I do think Prince is richer than people think he is. The reason why I think this is that he never sells property etc when folks say he owes money. It appears to me he will only pay out of what he earns rather than what he has stored up

Yeah, my bad. My math was wrong.

25k x 21 nights x £31.21 ticket price = £16,385,250 (not including the Premium/Gold Circle tickets, but you gotta imagine those boosted it up to at least £25mill)

+

2500 (Indigo2 capacity) x 21 nights x £31.21 = £1,638,525 (again not including the Premium tickets which were more expensive, let's say pushing it up to £3 mill)

On the basic price mathematics:

1. The O2 concerts sold out at just short of 17,000 tickets for the arena seating arrangement used

16,739 x 21 nights x £31.21 ticket price = £10,970,908

2. The Indigo2 capacity is 2,350, and standard tickets cost £25.

2,350 x 21 nights x £25 = £1,233,750

lowkey

jayz's wealth is highly exaggerated, forbes reports what the lawyers, publicists, ect tell them. jayz is a minority investor in alot of businesses that has consistantly lost money. he dont own nothing outright, he has small shares and they use his name for promotion. when the nets were sold his share was made public, his initial investment was a little over 5 million and currently his shares is worth less than his investment.there is a minority owner (a white man of course) in the 40/40 clubs, they have closed a few of them because of declining sales.his live nation deal is like 100 million OVER TEN YEARS, thats like 10 million a year.jayz is constantly riding bandwagons, looking for opportunities to hang on whoever is hot coattails, his wife works 365 days a year, this dude is still grinding way too hard to be any where near a billionaire.

In 2001 Johnson became the first African American billionaire, and the first black person to be listed on any of Forbes world's rich list.

When you mean a billionaire musician, do you mean net worth or money grossed generated over a career span, also living or passed away, etc.? That's a big difference.

But if you're talking about a musician who made a billion dollars during their career after debt, taxes, lawsuits, paid off lawyers, managers, rent, staff, auditors, etc., then no. There's never been an artist like that.

Artist like MJ, Madonna, Elvis, and the Beatles are examples of artist who generated/grossed billions of dollars in record sales, royalties, tours, merchandise, movies, etc., but it wasn't pocketed/net.

Michael Jackson had assets (mansions, artwork, catalogs) worth a over a billion dollars, but that wasn't money in the bank/cash in your pockets, so he was struggling in that sense because his debt was more than he could handle. So when Bashir asked him how much he's worth, MJ wasn't lying, he was a billionaire but in assets only.

nod

Michael owned:

Neverland Ranch

Hayvenhurst (the Jackson family home in Encino

other properties around CA and other countries

Sony/ATV catalog

Mijac catalog

his master recordings

and other assests

he even owns the rights to the South Carolina State Anthem...

well i guess in mj's case they were talking about assets not actual liquid cash. but a billionaire is a billionaire right?

No Limit put out so many fucking albums between 96-2001, I ain't surprised. and P made a bigger cut since No Limit was his label. There had to have been damn near 50 albums released on No Limit just in 98/99 alone. Even if each one of those records only went gold, and the CD's retailed at $15, that's $75 mill right there, and a fair few of those records went either platinum or multi-platinum in some cases. He had other ventures like No Limit Films as well.

$600 mill seems a little extreme, but I'd guesstimate that he's worth at least $300 mill. Forbes Magazine had him at $60 mill in '98, and he made a LOT more money in 99, 2000, and 2001.

[Edited 9/23/10 20:51pm]

And not to mention the movies he put out. I was suprised when I found out how much he's worth. But good for him tough. He deserves it.

The general consensus that MJ's Debt was caused mainly by lavish spending couldnt be further from the truth. Its quite sad how clueless and misinformed people are...how easily they are lead by the media. Fact is when Michael merged with Sony in '95. He retained half a share in the Beatles catalog and half of Sony publishing. In that deal, being part owner he agreed to pay half of every future purchase. For Ex. in 2007 Sony/ATV bought Viacom's Famous Music catalog for $ 370m.Both Sony Corp. and Michael split 50/50, $ 185 million each. Michael as we know borrowed against his 50% stake to pay for his half of the cost.

"News media accounts that Michael Jackson was "debt-ridden", without providing further explanation, gave the impression that the King of Pop's financial situation was something the general public could identify with or readily understand.

But far from it. Jackson's so-called "massive debt" was something that hardly any of us will ever be fortunate enough to experience. I dare say most in the general public have never heard of Jackson's category of indebtedness, better known by some as "acquisition debt".

This kind of acquisition debt involves multi-million dollar purchases of ventures where a significant percentage of the purchase price is financed through "leverage" borrowing. The assets of the acquired company are used as collateral for the borrowed capital.Michael used the equity in his own catalog, MIJAC, along with the acquired assets and future income to come from Northern Songs, for loan qualification -- with the newly acquired assets structured for equity to flow toward servicing the debt.Bottom line. Michael's massive debt as reported by traditional media outlets, could only have resulted from acquiring multi-million dollar ventures, and not as media myth makers would have it, "lavish spending."

Private Equity Group PTG

"The investment bank's transactions have included repping the buyers of MLB's Texas Rangers; structuring Sony ATV's $300 million of debt financing for its 50% ownership of the Beatles library"

http://www.dailyfinance.c.../19657781/

Sony Corp. has its own debt with their share of Sony/ATV. Its common in the business world to leverage, to use assets as collateral. In a lot of ways, Michael was doing what other businesses/business men do every day. Get a loan using an asset as collateral and invest the proceed back to the asset. If you want to be successful this is how business is done.
Michael never spend liquid, didnt believe in it and he was a smart man for it. Chrysler, Blockbuster, Donald Trump..all who spent liquid, and all went bankrupt.
Michael knew what he was doing. His intelligence was truly underestimated by many people.

Anyways Michael was a Billionaire in Assets and a damn good business man imo.

lol @ ppl on here pitying him as if he didnt leave a billion dallor estate to his mother and kids, as if he doesnt own half of one of the largest publishing ventures in the world. lol...

Does Prince own his masters/publishing???? I'd really like to know cause he should y'know with him being smart and a good buisnessman and whatnot. Also can some of you inform me on his buisness ventures please.

No.

yes the living Beatles and the dead ones estates own the master recordings to the Beatles tracks.

they also own the writers shares to the publishing rights, what they don't own is the publishers share of the publishing rights. meaning they still get paid 50% of the roylaties but have no say over who gets to use the music. Sony/ATV owns the half and determines who uses the songs.

What I've always wondered is about Purple Rain. It is Purple productions or something like that-what was Prince's take of thatmovie. I mean it gossed over $80m in the US alone (and this is 1984)-then factor in video sales and the rights to TV. No artist in history has produced that volume of cash in a 12 mt period

Purple Rain-the album

PR-the film

PR-the tour

PR-the video

PR-the live video-(15 weeeks at no 1 in the US)

Did Prince have a decent slice of each of these or would the live video etc be treated on the same level as the album % wise.

Baloney. Bill Cosby was considered to be the richest African American in entertainment during the 80s. In 1993 he was the only one wealthy enough to make the Forbes '400 Richest People In America' list with a networth of $315 million. Oprah replaced him two years later with $340 million.

In 2001, Bob Johnson was crowned a billionaire. Ms. Winfrey followed him in 2003.

Prince (and the Revolution, one would assume) were only getting pieces of those pies. I'd be willing to bet a good number of these tours brought in more money than everything associated with PR combined. Highest grossing concert ...n history.

HIGHLY, highly exaggerated. In September '88 Forbes estimated he made $60 million. Incredible sum but nowhere enough to make him a billionaire and then began to drop as the years went by. In '91 he signed a deal with Pepsi that was said to have a chance to be worth more than a billion dollars but that's still different than pocketing the same amount.

YOU don't get to decide when a discussion is over. rolleyes If you're going to state "facts", provide a source. Why should I look something up when you're the one posting it? And I will say AGAIN, since you keep speaking of him in the first person, MICHAEL JACKSON IS DEAD! "mjs net worth..." He has NO NET WORTH. HE'S DEAD! lol

Now, first of all, show me ANYTHING that claims Michael Jackson's net worth was EVER a couple billion dollars. Before or after his death. Second, quoted from that linked MTV article, "his estate has generated nearly $1 billion in the past year". OK, so where does it say that they've EARNED $1 billion? Where does it say that $1 billion is net? It doesn't. There are costs involved in production, promotion and distribution of ALL those products. And there are MANY hands in the profit pot. His estate GENERATING nearly $1 billion does not mean dead MJ or anybody else actually EARNED $1 billion. Are you getting this yet?

FYI, SamiDion, you're wrong on both counts. biggrin His estate isn't worth over a billion just because you want it to be, and the STICKY clearly states, "Discuss Everything and Anything MJ"
