Thanks for posting those excellent articles! Alot of good information on Betty.

You're welcome! I hope you enjoy the remastered Betty CDs as much as I am! It is a shame that there is not one single available video source of Betty performing in the '70s! That's damn inexcusable. I can't help but think that there is some kind of footage out there somewhere... I hope someone can find it and salvage it! eek

Some musicians from Tackhead also recorded for their only album around 1984 on Atlantic

Chops Horns used to jam as well on sessions from Sugar Hill-artists and 2 from them perform these days with Alicia Keys.

BTW, the sound quality on these Light in the Attic re-masters is simply amazing! Clear, clean, and crisp yet warm as can be--sounds like I'm listening to brand new vinyl originals! Can't remember the last time a CD sounded so good blasting through my stereo speakers... "Special People" indeed. cool

The song Is It Love or Desire? is just too hot for words...wish it was longer! :smoke coming from the speakers: music

Whorey Angel and Crashin' From Passion are exciting funk jams, while When Romance Says Goodbye is deep, smokey, and seductive. What a versatile voice she has--Betty can growl, snarl, and belt like a trooper and yet sing a hauntingly seductive jazzy song also. I wanted some "new" music--well, this is it! I'd better put it on my Ipod, otherwise, I will wear out these CDs. If you don't have 'em, then grab 'em while they're still available!

Reading your review,I can't wait to get 'Is It Love Or Desire'! lol

I discovered her back in 2007 when a local Detroit newspaper did an article on her and the remasters of he first 3 albums, but I didn't actually purchase any until last year in October. I went 2 the record store and on a whim, bought "Is It Love Or Desire", and "They Say I'm Different", and was floored by what I heard. Stupid, butt nekkid, gritty, unapologetic, raw, nasty, in your face funk! My face was in the 'funk face' mode 4 about 3 weeks after! My favorite songs are "Shoo Be Doo and Cop Him", "Special People", "Stars Starve, You Know", "Bottom of The Barrel", and "Bar Hoppin".

Now I need 2 get her debut album, and "Nasty Gal". cool

....and Nasty Gal and Betty Davis are my two fave from her, the former being too much funk one can take! Prepare to have your funk face on again.

You can find great info on Betty and the history here, on the official site to her label - http://lightintheattic.ne...etty-davis

The remasters can be purchased here too.

I'm going to be the first detractor it seems, but fear not, it's not all bad.

I downloaded the 'This Is It' Anthology off the back of this thread, have to say musically, it's all jamming and can't really fail to be given the players involved, i was feeling the music. The one thing i don't particularly like is Bettys vocals, i find the growly delivery OTT, hilarious and too constant. It gets old fast though.

I guess Nikka Costa listened to her, but she actually sings well 80% of the time, Betty the opposite at 20%, too much growly squawking. Having said that, i've listened to it three times. She might have had something i guess.

7.5 out of 10.

What you call "growly squawking" is what many of us consider gritty soulful F.U.N.K.! If you don't hear what we hear then that is your loss! lol

That's all it is. I think she's ok, don't get me wrong, I'm not hating. Just not loving her delivery is all. It's tolerable for awhile but it's just 19 tracks of the same schtick on that Anthology.

Thanks, man!

@Marrk, I actually don't really argue with Betty criticisms because she is targeting a very specific audience. Some will not get along with her style, EVEN TODAY. However, i do not agree for the reasons Purplethunder said. Also, if you are a funk man, Betty is your bible....you probably just ain't to into your funk as much....hence your avatar wink razz

Ha..i expected a put down, par for the course with you!lol . but actually Funk is probably my favourite genre of music overall. I own a shitload of it from the 60's thru til now.

I did say there was a lot to enjoy there. Musically. players from 'Tower of Power', 'GCS', 'Family Stone' and the Pointer sisters backing her up, can't go wrong really.

Ha! Hey, i don't put anyone down, they're just jokes that never go down well on people a bit too serious around here.

Well there you go, not much to debate about, really.

Can you imagine the late Bette Davis trying to sing funk?! nuts lol She couldn't carry a tune in a bucket even with elevator music! Same thing happens when I bring up Betty Davis to people I know--they pause and give me the oddest looks when I say Betty Davis sings the hell outa funk! lol

To be quite honest, I'm not shocked. Until recently not even black media brought her up. She's truly "unsung" because black audiences barely knew her after the '70s and if they did, they didn't wanna know. She was so raunchy I'm sure it scared Millie Jackson...and MILLIE WAS RAUNCHY. That's scary. lol

One of my older sisters used to go to Betty's concerts with her boyfriend, who was a bass player. I hear she used to drive the male fans crazy during her performance. Unfortunately, back in those days, society wasn't ready for a female performer who made raunch moves on stage. If you ask me, Betty Davis was the female Prince....bold and loved to shock her audience.
