Amazing Artist that Americans Most likely never heard Of Being American, I constantly am frustrated, because not much international music filters through here. So when ever I have the luxury to travel, I'm constantly amazed by the amount of great artist and music that this globe has to offer. That never broke through to the states. Since we as orgers are a very international bunch, post some great non american artist and their songs that have never broken on through to the U.S.
i'll name a few
Feeder,Great Brit rock Band
The Frames(Glen Hansard)/& The Swell Season, Amazing Irish Folkrock band(s)
John Butler Trio, Amazing Australian american artist
Imogen Heap/Frou Frou, Pretty much when I heard her, I kinda put Bjork to the side and shes my new hottie downtempo girl
Corinne Bailey Rae, Amazing Brit Soul girl
Christopher Mae, amazing french pop singer
Monkey Majik, Interesting canadian japanese pop group
what are yours?

St Etienne - something for everyone (some crap) Check out Fox Base Alpha and You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone
Thomas Dolby - Earlier stuff was slightly mental (a few hits though) but Astronauts & Heretics is one of my fav albums by any artist BEAUTIFUL!!! The Charlatans - first 3 albums are great (particularly Up To Our Hips) Individual songs; St Ettienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart,Nothing Can Stop Us Now, Carnt Sleep, Wilson. Charlatans - Can't get out of bed, Jesus hairdo....too many. Thomas Dolby - famous would be Hyperactive or She Blinded Me With Science but all of Astronauts is fantastic. If you want something that I think any Prince fan would appreciate it has to be I Love You Goodbye or Beauty of A Dream.....2 of the most beautiful songs ever written and That's Why People Fall In Love is genius. In fact you've just helped me work out my fav album of all time [Edited 9/23/10 7:42am]

I'm not shure how big the demographic is when it comes to jazz-listeners in the US, but i remember her appearing as guest on an album of bassist Marcus Miller and hearing a particular track from that album on which she sings getting a fair amount of airplay. I think also that the unfortunate loss of her husband had her not appearing much in the media for a while, but i noticed that she has returned for awhile now.

[Edited 9/23/10 9:13am] Her style has changed a little bit from before her break...not bad, just different.

I'm happy to say I know most of these, even if I don't have extensive knowledge of their music.
Very cool thread. This kind of exposure is one of the things I like most about the org. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I actually know a couple of the guys from Feeder. I used to live in a smaller city that had a vibrant alternative rock scene back in the early 00's (perhaps still does) and Feeder would play there every so often.
Their original drummer killed himself a few years back. Very sad.
Anyway, I wonder how many of you have heard of a reggae/metal band called Skindred? They are from Wales and they are awesome.

I don't think any of these are foreign to the U.S. I've heard them all here. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

/\/\ I know Idan!!!
We met at Glastonbury in 2005, he and my band were playing the same stage on the same. We had a good conversation and he gave me his information.
Then last year I saw his CD on the racks at the store. Nice to see him doing stuff, he was a very chill guy. |

I bought her first album as soon as it came out and played it over and over until I was...thrown...by the end of a relationship and then I couldn't listen anymore because I associated the relationship with her songs... But that was two or so years ago. Think I'll listen to it again. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Does this count? Willie K is an artist from Maui which I suppose technically is the US but Hawaiian music has its own vibe and is not played widely on the mainland. Here he is covering Jimi's Waterfall. The song really kicks in at about 2:15 so have a little patience.
Osaka Monaurail from Japan, a true funk orchestra in a James Brown vein. Extremely tight band:
dZihan and Kamien Orchestra from Vienna mash it up live with a twelve piece band:
Two from Pizzacato Five (Japan) showing a great range of styles:
Tutto Matto from Italy. This one has got a funky gospel flava to it. Kinda reminds me of how Sylvester useta sound:
OK, everyone knows Brian Eno (UK) but not many have heard this driving remix of Ali Click (originally from the 1992 album Neural Net). Love the Billy Stewart vocal samples:

Sadly, these guys from Mexico are not together any longer but they certainly do something really different. I give you- The Nortec Collective:
Kevin Johansen and the Nada from Argentina:
Miguel Bose from Spain:
