I agree I should give props to Flyte Tyme Productions. Jam and Lewis indeed gave SOS the Minneapolis sound.

Jamm and Lewis were in the Prince protogee band, The Time.

The Time was pretty much hired musicians... good ones, but not really allowed to have any creative input in their albums.

The first album was written, produced and performed by Prince... then he got his friends from the old neighborhood to perform the songs just like Prince recorded them... note for note for the studio recording. Prince is heard singing and playing on the first album.

Jamm and Lewis had the creative urge and started moonlighting in production of other acts.

The first I am aware of was SOS band. Jamm and Lewis were in Atlanta on their own time working on the SOS band project while on tour with Time.

They got snowed in (in Atlanta) no less and missed a concert for the Time. Prince had to play I think it was bass back stage behind a curtain to ensure that the concert went off without a hitch.

but after that, Jamm and Lewis were fired from the Time.

They needed to go anyway, it was in the cards I guess. Interesting that they are back performing with The Time again... Hmmm.....

J&L didn't cross their path until SOS's third album with the song "High Hopes".

Before that (and even during J&L's productionwork) the band could stand well on their own

and weren't mainly vocalists if ya check a lil' more of their background and musicianship.

Around 1983 the SOS band did an exellent production for the late Eddie Kendricks :

Yeah, a friend hooked me up to Lance's album, about 10 years back. And their production for Pia surprised me too.

The first track i heard from her album was "I Don't Wanna Love" with possibly Terry Lewis thumping that nasty bass lol !

It has that instrumental vibe which imo also approaches the sound of Rodney Franklin's "The Groove" ... lol

Wow. Learn something new every day. I had no idea they were behind Tender Love. You couldn't TELL me that wasn't gon be my wedding song. Not that I had a groom or anything. Just saying.

I like S.o.S. from pre Jam & Lewis as well as through Flyte Tyme.

The Jam - Lewis / S.o.S stuff to me seemed much more like a Jam-Lewis group with Mary Davis as lead vocalist. Don't get it twisted. I loved that music.

Like I said, good for us that Prince and J&L parted ways. Really RB music benefitted from that fall out.

Would releases from their Perspective label count ? (Lo-Key, Mint Condition, Raja-Nee). Not shure if that was still a part of their Flyte Tyme-label, production-wise.

if you also check J&L productions, then you'll notice that in some credits the trinity of Jam, Lewis & Monte are referred as "The Secret"

Even Jellybean did some productions around those days:

The "Sands of Time" album is my fave.

^ I have this and the previous album on vinyl. It had to be good for my cheap azz to pay for it.
