What is heartbreaking to me is that Tammi's own family was cavalier about James beating her and David too. Her cousin says Tammi told her that James beat her, but she didn't want to hear it and another relative was just very matter of fact about Ruffin beating her with that helmet.

They were liked that, when she was raped as well. Remember, her sister said that the entire incident, was "Swept under the rug".

Yeah that shit really pissed me off. It was like, "oh it was swept under the rug" like, out of sight out of mind. Ya'll didn't go to the police? Ya'll didn't take her to the hospital? I mean wtf was going on back in the day? disbelief And since her fam was so non chalant about that, it's not surprising that they knew that James and David beat up on her and they didn't say nothing about it or wanted to hear about it...especially James since he was known as such a super star....I bet they said "oh he could never do that Tammi", or "well what do you expect Tammi, you should have done what he said"....pisses me the fuck off just thinking about it. It really bothers me that they knew about this GROWN MAN superstar who was sleeping and beating on a young lady who was UNDERAGE. disbelief Sure David wasn't much better than James, but dang at least she was an adult by the time she was messing with David and actually fought back with him.

Yea that was puzzling.. Valerie did say that she sang the songs with Marvin and then they went back and re-recorded Tammi's vocals over hers.. but if true Valerie will never admit that it was her and not Tammi

I'm thinking, and had always thought, Valerie was doing that to respect Tammi (and this is only backed up by her husband and Ludie Montgomery) and not to admit that Motown had forced her and Marvin to cut the duets together despite Tammi's condition.

Didn't he(Marvin) disclose that secret in Divided Souls that it was Val, after all? hmmm

Love him as a performer and artist, but really, what a scumbag James Brown was. All that good he did is outweighed by the fact he beat women. sad

Yep. Marvin put a lot of things on the line with that book and this was one of them. Valerie's denials are a Motown thing (and a respect to Tammi also) lol

See you keep saying that over and over again that Val is keeping it secret "out of respect to Tammi" but how is she respecting Tammi by keeping it secret? confuse Because then its like you are saying that Marvin exposing the truth in his book is essentially disrespecting Tammi and we all know that Marvin would never do such a thing. If anything, I think Marvin respected Tammi more by putting the truth out there in the open and telling it how it really went down.

Her explination came a little off to me in the interview I have to admit...she said, "i covered the track and then she sung over me so she did actually come in afterwards those are her vocals". It seemed kind of passe...but hell if she wants to respect her that way..you have to let her. Marvin isnt here to defend that except for his words...and real fans of hers will be able to tell if there is a difference or not.

What someone said after Tammi's Unsung:

I am fortunate to have had brief, but meaningful interactions with Ms. Terrell. Even with all of the badness and sadness that I wish I could have shielded this true Queen from, I am still bursting with joy as I read all of the loving and respectful comments here and on other sites regarding this UnSung Episode of Episodes. It wasn't perfect, but it definitely deserves an Emmy.

There was SO much to Ms. TT -a truly deep artistic soul of the highest magnitude. She was a victim of much, but she cannot be defined as a Victim. Tammi was a Dreamer who created her own reality in many ways despite whatever else went on around her. She had determination, raw strength, courage and an energizing JOY as solid as cast iron. This despite the fact that she was only human and had her sadnesses.

I celebrate that I connected to that joyful part of her spirit! The show did too, to some degree but not quite enough. The accomplishments of this Great One should not be overshadowed, even by the horrors she endured, any more than we can forget the talent of Billie Holliday because she suffered too,

In fact, the accomplishments of this iconic Artist are her lasting conquest and represents one of the true cultural highlights of the 20th Century. PUT HER IN THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME. What's WRONG with you people???

Personally you could go back to Tammi's solo work then go forward to the 1969 recordings and you can tell who's on the records. Tammi's voice was sexy and sassy. Valerie's was a little more gospel, therein lies the differences. lol

Nice try, Val. lol

James Brown was a beast, god rest his soul. Poster MrSoulPower told this story about James locking Marva Whitney in an elevator, kicked her in the guts and after he was done, he stuck the gun in her mouth,,,,ALL of that was because she wanted to quit the band.

And Bobby Womack witnessed him whacking a drummer right across the face in the middle of a rehearsal for not getting his chops right.

James, boy disbelief

Folks gave Ike Turner grief, but he couldn't hold a candle to JB,,,,not from the stories I heard.

Oh I can give you the reason. lol

Apparently the James Brown/Joe Tex rivalry was a long, grueling one that started around 1961. Joe Tex had written and recorded the original version of "Baby You're Right". Around that same period, someone gave the song to James and he made it an R&B hit. Joe wasn't exactly pleased that James got the hit he thought was his.

Then another element was added when James began dating Joe's woman. I think they were introduced when Joe and James were close by and somehow Joe's woman went in a club with Joe and left in James' arms. This angered Joe and one night when the two were co-headlining a gig somewhere, Joe, who was often the COMEDIAN, decided to mock James' "Please Please Please" ending. He had a cape dropped on him and he yelled "please please please please GET ME OUT OF THIS CAPE!" James saw this and was pissed off.

SO after the show, they have a little afterparty. Joe is chilling with his boys and having no idea of the shit that was to come. Suddenly James came out with a gun and began shooting at Joe's folks and everyone RAN out of there! James didn't hit nobody and Joe was lucky to escape with his life. lol

I guess "out of respect" for Tammi, could mean that Val did not want people to think that just because Tammi was going through what she was going through, that she was any less talented and could not do the job anymore.

Apparently Joe was a peaceful guy, for some reason, he didn't. shrug But I don't think Joe expected James to do what he did. It kinda shocked him. Remember after Joe initially left show business in the early '70s, he converted to Islam. Whatever anger Joe had at James he only directed it in his music and performances.

OK, autosave... rolleyes lol

Anyway, here's what I found about Patti LaBelle's relationship with Tammi:

(PATTI LABELLE & TAMMI TERRELL FRIENDSHIP)

One year, Tammi Terrell toured with Patti LaBelle & The Blue Bells. Tammi often hung out with Patti, Cindy, Nona and our girl Sarah Dash (special shout-out).

One afternoon, the girls were sitting at the table looking sad and gloomy. Cindy Birdsong's cheeks were tear stained because her mother had passed away but the management would not let her out of her contract to attend her mother's funeral.

According to LaBelle, "We all just sat there in disbelief." "The lesson of this day stayed with me forever about the cruelties of show business. My heart wept with her."

Patti LaBelle recalls those times spent with Tammi. "Tammi and I were buddies. We were so young back then, so young. I remember what a beautiful girl she was, pretty as can be. She had a beautiful spirit and was so fun loving and just loved life. Tammi was always making everyone laugh and feel good."

"Tammi was also bold, vivacious and daring on stage. Her voice was beautiful and nobody could sing like Tammi, nobody. She was free on stage, not stiff. She was a natural and unafraid. You felt her and her words hit your emotions when she sung."

"She was one of the purest souls I ever knew and one of the most generous people in this business. She held others in high regard. Tammi was a honest person in this business and it came through in everything she did.

The friendship that begun that summer with Tammi meant so much to us (Myself, Cindy, Nona and Sarah).

And Marvin was right. They was fucking with Tammi. That damn Berry and his famous dollars. SO after the show, they have a little afterparty. Joe is chilling with his boys and having no idea of the shit that was to come. Suddenly James came out with a gun and began shooting at Joe's folks and everyone RAN out of there! James didn't hit nobody and Joe was lucky to escape with his life. lol

Ummm correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't it had been Joe that should had been shooting at James ass instead of James shooting at Joe? lol Not only did he take the man's work but his woman too??? James deserved a bullet in his ass cheek for that.

You would think Joe would be the one acting a scrambled egg mess but NOOOOOOOOO James and his 33 front teeth had to take the cake lol

Little Richard took some heat from JB when they toured together at some point too. The industry was a jungle to black performers who wanted to maintain a survival, no wonder why every black performer who enjoyed a longevity to this day isn't known to be an easy person, and I wouldn't blame them for the world.

Ray Charles and James used to have a little beef but somehow they sorted it out. Same could be said about Richard and James.

And that couldn't be further from the truth. Even Nickolas said at one point when Tammi arrived at the studio to do "You're All I Need" after her first surgery that she had drastically changed to who she was before but she was able to finish those sessions. Go to a year later and Tammi is basically struggling. It's probably Val's guilty conscience though. Tammi's two solo tracks were overdubbed by Motown with Marvin's vocals. You could tell Marvin was struggling to deal with shit when they had him doing that. At one point during "I Can't Believe You Love Me", I could've sworn Marvin was angrily growling. I think Marvin was rightfully PISSED OFF during those sessions. He felt Motown was fucking with Tammi. Later on, he said to David, "I could see first hand what this business was all about" in relation to what they had him do DESPITE Tammi's illness.

And Marvin was right. They was fucking with Tammi. That damn Berry and his famous dollars. That's why her mother didn't want nobody but Marvin there at the funeral from Motown...everybody else was banned. It all makes sense. I need to read Marvin's book again. I know there was a whole lot more Motown skeletons that he revealed but I've forgotten now lol

That book is a mess, ain't it? disbelief but it really made me feel sorry for all of the people who were associated with the Motown legacy, and it shattered my assumption that being a black owned label, you'd think they would cut their artists some slack.

The only thing missing from the book(and one of the most important things I might add) was Janis Gaye's interview, should've given another side of the story in relation to her life with Marvin, but knowing the problem she was facing at the time, I understand her reasoning for shying away from the project.
