I really don't want his first big movie character after freaking BRUNO to be Freddie! Sorry!

After the big stink everybody raised about Ray Charles being portrayed by WANDA(me included lol) I think I'll hold my judgement until I see this.

Another thing, Freddie Mercury had a crazy sense of humor, I'm guessing Cohen can showcase that that too,,,of course if directed well.

I think he said that in a magazine interview sometime in the early '80s...or shortly after he split from his only girlfriend (and best friend) Mary Austin.

I think he said that in a magazine interview sometime in the early '80s...or shortly after he split from his only girlfriend (and best friend) Mary Watson.

Didn't he split with her in the 70s though? hmmm I don't remember.

Many have said that "Mama" from "Bohemian" was actually Mary. I have to sit this one through, though. As beautiful as this song is, I could never figure it out,,,,then again, I've only rediscovered Queen's music recently.

Yeah he split from her around '77 or '78 I'm not sure. I think "Best Friend" was his song for Mary... who knows about "Bohemian"?

OK, I'm reading they split in the mid-1970s so it was roughly 1975, 1976-ish, during Queen's biggest heyday ("Bohemian Rhapsody" era). He had a relationship with a male exec around that time I'm reading.

I think it's a horrible, horrible choice. I hope you guys enjoy it though.

Because you have his Ali G./Borat/Bruno persona in mind or because you think he can´t act or because of his looks? I think that Sacha B. Cohen is the first "actor" that comes to mind when it comes to resembling Freddie Mercury ( as I said above, he was the first person I could think of when I read the thread title....he looks VERY much like Freddie).

It can all come full circle when Kanye West asks Sasha to sing "Fat Bottomed Girls" over his Queen beat.

I'm not so sure about the casting either, but I like the director's work, so we'll see.

My only issue though is the film's ending in 1985. I think Freddie lived a very interesting life, and even his last years should be within the story, but seeing that its based on QUEEN as opposed to just Freddie, I can understand.

Something tells me he's gonna pull if off and a lot of people are going to be surprised. nod

I think ending the film in 1985 is a good place, my guess is that it will end upon his diagnosis. I really dont wanna see a film playing out his death, if you really want to know the whole story on that, his companion till the end wrote an excellent book on it, and i think if you read it, i think you will see that Freddie still deserves privacy and those last few years were in total seclusion, rarely ever leaving the house, for someone that loved the "world" and travel so much, to be secluded to one place for so long had to be a nightmare. Freddie's diagnosis came very soon after Live Aid, coming while on the Kind of Magic tour, Freddie had noticed something and had a check up and thats when he was diagnosed, he later told the band in 1989 when doing the Miracle album, which as Brian May says "we thought that would be his last", but surprisingly Freddie looked a bit better during certain Miracle videos, but once Innuendo was made, it was "borrowed time", thats why the "Innuendo" video is animated, and then when he made "slightly mad" video, he had to have make up to cover up, but as Roger said, he was in pain and so ill during that video and the last one "days of our lives" so knowing all that, i dont want to see that played out by an actor.

its called "Mercury and Me" written by Jim Hutton, it has alot of details about those last few years, especially during the "Innuendo" stage when he really had to 100% secluded. Mary Austin has also written a book on his and her relationship

Actually "Love of My Life" is for her, "Best Friend" was written by bassist John Deacon

I know, I'm just thinking of Borat & Bruno...I'm not serious, though

I'm actually curious to see what he could do with a serious role. I bet he could do well, he is certainly a great comedy actor, and fully commits to roles. But comedic actors sometimes ruin their careers by trying to be serious [JIM CARREY!!!!]

I guess the real question is, can he play the role and make it NOT funny?

Well if Marlon Wayans has gotten rave reviews for playing serious roles (and he'll play Richard Pryor sometime in the future), then maybe Sacha can do it. Who knows?

Depending on how it's written, and who is directing (I nominate Sean Penn, or Oliver Stone, maybe even Quentin Tarantino), I feel strongly that Sacha Baron Cohen could nail an Oscar winning performance playing Freddy Mercury. Plus Sacha is NOT afraid to GO THERE, lol. Another thing about Freddy Mercury; he had a pretty wild sense of humor himself, so Sacha probably wouldn't even have to dial it back by much, lol. I bet this will be a powerful movie, can't wait to see it.

Sacha Baron Cohen

Well lemme put it to you like this since we can kinda relate (me not wanting Terence Howard to play Marvin), any chance this will even be produced next year? lol
