The Jacksons Feat Mick Jagger 'State Of Shock'* *Expertly avoiding another MJ thread hopefully.
You can't avoid my Avatar. It's bright bastard red! Hope it puts you in a uh, uh, uh, uh, Uh! State of Shock!
This thread is about one of my favourite songs of all fucking time. Yes Seriously. #3 on Billboards Hot100, #14 in the UK. I had a whole three pages in one of my scrapbooks devoted to press releases, adverts and lyrics to this song. I loved it. Bad as a motherfucker! It rocks out! I have the picture disc, Twelve inch single (Dance Mix). I just love it!
Love the demo with Freddie Mercury (It must be released properly!) loved the final version With Mick. This was a total surprise to me back in '84, we'd have known about this months in advance if this was today. Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson? WTF?!. I know it's a love or hate song to some folks. But i think it's worthy of a chat.
I need mouth to mouth resuscitation baby!

phoned in by both of them. a conference call with a tape recorder, if you will.

Don't naturally expect a link, it's not a law.

Hve you heard the version with Michael and Freddie Mercury?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Hell NOOOOOO!
What makes you say that? It's funny what different people hear. I put this in my top 10 Jacksons songs, i can't mention Mike too much but yeah, if people want to hear something different by him, this makes the mixtape. I great a "WTF?!" usually in a good way. folks don't know this song generally.

I dig both versions but love the MJ/Freddie demo of it.

Oh yes. I want this out in CD quality like i want 'Moonbeam Levels' out by Prince, only it's a zillion times better to me. My Holy Grail. I'd probably kill in exchange for it.

THIS THIS AND THIS.
I like the Freddie/MJ demo better, just because I ADORE Freddie, but you can definitely tell it's a demo cause Freddie's not really serving it like he really could have.
And PLEASE send all your moombeam levels to me in the form of a proper release of that song and I'd be happy with that too. Thanks.
Lemme go listen to that know matter fact. It's been a minute. Prince esta muerto...

I love this song, and I have the 12" single too. I remember loving it when it came out 26 years ago, and I still love it.
This song was also caught up in the backward masking craze of the 80's. ALLEGEDLY when Mick says "Look at me, look at me...ohhh, look at me" near the end of the record, he said "Hey ni**er".
When Michael said, "You GOT me in", near the end, backwards, it ALLEGEDLY said "My name is Michael". God, the silly shit we bought into back then.
I really wish Freddie had recorded this w/ MJ. But the other MJ was good, too.

Freddie/MJ have more of a punch to it
"If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with" - Michael Jackson

I prefer this one too: Mick/MJ's version sounds a lil' stiff & calculated whereas the demo version sounds more loose and fun IMO. Love their other collaboration...
He said they worked for 3 songs, which one was the 3rd? I wouldn't mind had MJ sang a WHOLE album full of Freddie's songbook.

this track was FONKAY to me. Mike knows you have to fuse the funk and rock together to not alienate certain segments of fans. i loved state of shock, it has a killer groove AND guitar riff. other "rockers' that have great guitar but not grooves by MJ are Black or White, Give In to Me and Dirty Diana.

I don't see the point of talking about a song unless there is a link. not being mean, jes saying. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

That's laziness on your part, not an oversight on someone else's.

The 3 songs they worked on was
State Of Shock (there was no drum so they slammed the bathroom door instead ) There Must Be More To Life Than This Victory
Victory was later reworked with Queen and The Jacksons (which sounds EPIC) but neither version has surfaced
another piece of info. The cowriter of State Of Shock IS Freddy but under an alias "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Kinda off topic, but I'm thinking of the songs that were considered for the Victory album
Torture Wait One More Chance Be Not Always State Of Shock We Can Change The World The Hurt Body ---- Where Do I Stand (later released solo by Marlon) Still In Love With You Liberian Girl (later released on Bad) Buffalo Bill Victory There Must Be More To Life Than This (later released solo by Freddie) Power Nona Doing Dirty
LittleBlueCorvette probably knows some more titles
and I believe Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin' should've been on the album "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

interesting ... i wonder if another alias-example is documented somewhere online, because that BMI-info comes from BMI's official site and the supposed Randy Hansen which is referred to seems the one pictured below, at the time part of the group Machine Gun :
^pictured in the middle ^
He's currently doing a tribute-project for Jimi Hendrix on his official site
Another BMI publication from Randy :

I have two versions of, "There must be more to life". One with Freddie and one with Freddie and Michael. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

I only like a hand full of MJ songs, and this one, is my favorite. Yeah, I said it! Never heard the 12" or the demo (thanks to those who provided links!!) Quentin Tarantino did an episode of iTunes Celebrity Playlist Podcast shortly after MJ died. His episode was all MJ & Jackson 5 songs and he gave much props to this track, even saying it should have replaced The Girl Is Mine on Thriller. It was the first time I ever heard anybody other than myself give props to the song.
