I don't think she sold that many albums, but I think you mean with singles/videos/albums. Madonna and Mariah both hover around 200 million. Music figures are difficult to confirm, however. It keeps changing.

^^^ Nvm, Mariah is around 175 million (if the figures are accurate)

If Mariah is slightly less successful than Madonna in the USA, then logically she must be a good deal behind Madonna globally so I guess Guinness is correct. I think it is estimated that globally Madonna has sold approximately 20 million more than Mariah

Not 40x platinum . More like 30-32x platinum:

Control - certified 5x; should be 6x (last certified 1989, and sold 456,535 copies between 1991 and February 2005)

Rhythm Nation - certified 6x; should be 7x (last certified 1992, and sold 1.320 million copies between 1991 and February 2005)

janet. - certified 6x; should be 7x (just passed the 7 million scanned mark last year)

DOAD - certified 2x; is accurately certified (had scanned 2.269 million copies as of February 2005)

The Velvet Rope - certified 3x; is accurately certified (had scanned 3.188 million copies as of February 2005)

All For You - certified 2x; should be 3x (had scanned 3.072 million copies as of February 2005)

Damita Jo - certified 1x; is accurately certified (just passed the 1 million scanned mark last year)

20 Y.O. - certified 1x; is accurately certified (has sold approximately 750k)

Discipline - no certification; should be gold (has sold approximately 455k)

Total should be 6 + 7 + 7 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 0.5 = 30.5 million

You could make the argument that her first two albums should each be certified gold, so that would add another million to the total.
