I love this song and knew J-Lo had to have stolen it from Chante. Especially since I had Chante's album at least 6 months prior to J-Lo's debut single.

Wow, that is almost the same. The foundation of the song isn't hard to miss. Looks like another Beyonce vs. Kelly Clarkson debate.

Tommy Motolla was usually the one trying to ruin Mariah by stealing ideas for J.Lo, not P.Diddy.

J.Lo's "I'm Real" was rushed out with the same sample used in the original version of "Loverboy"... heard in the trailer for Glitter. Of course, Sony could release J.Lo's first because it wasn't syncing with the release of a movie.

It could be argued though that if you heard Chante's version first, and her's was the runaway hit, that you'd say the same about hers, and not care of J-Lo's that much. I actually like Chante's more simply because it was done first, and I'm always one to root for the underdog in a situation like this.

you could argue that, but as a Chante fan, especially of her slow ballads like It's Alright and Love's Taken Over, this song does not strike me on the same level, however, the Latin flavor and sped up dance beat actually helped improve the song and Jennifer was able to handle it on that level.

After I saw this thread, I went online and grabbed the album. I kind of dig it.

but this is what happens when you have very simple production by so called producers who are beatmakers, ure gonna have tons of sound alikes, rip offs, thefts whatever you want to call them, but its more about the actually producers ripping each other off, not Jlo stealing from Chante, they were irrelevant in this

+1. Chante shouldn'e even be IN this drama. Wish she'd stick to the more "timeless" stuff from her first 2 albums. "Beatmakers"...pfft.

She has tried to do that.

"This Moment Is Mine" album is excellent. To me, it is her best solo album. Rodney did "If I Gave Love" and her remake of "You Got The Love" and I loved both. to me, though, the shining star on that album was definitely "I Cry To Myself" which is classic Chante.

I agree....that track is really lovely. Also like the Ray Parker production on that album, too.

I also LOVE the song "Love's Still Alright" off the "Exposed" album (Jam & Lewis producing).

For me though, "A Love Supreme" is as perfect an album in this genre that you could hope to find. Bliss from start to finish.

Question:

Since neither woman wrote the song... can't anybody record it as long as the songwriter and record company gives the okay?

Roberta Flack's song Killing Me Softly, has been recorded many times but I don't believe she wrote it so she has no say.

Yes, that is true. However, in today's beat mandated music society, it becomes a bidding/fighting war for a particular song. Yes, it's legal for another artist to do another artists song, but today, they don't make music the way they used to. They used to concentrate on arrangements, now it's the same track.

I have a feeling when P Diddy heard the Chante song, it was probably unfinished. Therefore Rodney just rearranged the Chante track and gave it to J-Lo.

In the 50s, 60s, and 70s, it was not uncommon to have several artists record the same song. Then when one person has a hit with the song, it becomes theirs. Motown was BIG on this. There are so many versions of various tracks from Norman Whitfield, HDH and Smokey because they would have different artists sing different arrangements of the songs.

That's what Chante is. I would raise an eyebrow if Chante came with

and album full of uptempo tracks and 3 slow songs.

As far as Chante's claim against J-Lo, i knew when i first heard it that

J-Lo got the song from her. Although i didn't know i should've known that

P Diddy was behind it.
