Stephane Grapelli and friends Holy shit! I had never even heard of this virtuoso violin player and his jazz band, but I just saw the last 10 minutes of a live show from New Orleans on an excellent new channel on Sky TV called performance. (For those in the UK with Sky, just go to channel 259)
It was a live set up with improvised jazz and the band was made up of violin, bass, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. It must have been recorded in the 80's judging by the hairstyles and clothes, but the band were tight! Some excellent improvising from each band player. I am very impressed! For U night owls and insomniacs, this is repeated at 5am this morning

I know of him, though I'm not sure I've heard any of his music. He passed away 6 years ago at the age of 89. I think he started working with guitarist Django Reinhardt in The Quintet of The Hot Club Of France back in the '30s. Since then he's worked with Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Larry Coryell, McCoy Tyner, and some others I can't think of right now. This post not for the wimp contingent. stephane grappelli has a very long and rich musical history. he was a member of the quintet of the hot club of france with django rheinhardt. it was the band that made django famous.
he has played with a great many jazz greats. i had the pleasure of seeing him twice in concert. one time at a big jazz festival, and once in a small club. he was a marvelous player, very musical, graet improvisor. his best stuff is on a label called "black lion" check out a cd called "parisian thoroughfare" (if anyone actually buys cds anymore). i'm glad you got to experience that. i wish i could see it. ------------------------------------------------
