your favorite 11 non-prince songs

if you had to choose 11 non-prince songs to listen to forever or a very long time, what would they be (and perhaps why)? i am not going to think too deply about this, but here are some i enjoy. really just feeling unaware of what all is out there and hunting for good songs biggrin

EDIT: or post a new set every week or differentiated categories as has been suggested!

suzanne -- nina simone (she really brought this song to life -- that's what she does!)

real, real -- nina simone (makes me want to get married!)

way down deep -- sweet honey in the rock (the deepest childrens song ever)

sunshowers -- dr buzzards original savannah band (just a feel good song)

zarmina -- abdel hazim (i was searching for good bellydance music and this was so smooth)

garden of simple -- ani difranco (about everything, dreams, and nothing)

never givin' up -- taja sevelle (it's upbeat, she's got fire in her voice)

how do i love thee -- yasmeen amina olya (i never appreciated this poem until she put meaning in every note)

power flower -- stevie wonder (a song about pan on a record about plants, what's not to like?)

white winter hymnal -- fleet foxes (great imagery created from one little verse)

bittersweet -- meshell ndegeocello (lovely musc and words)

tchaikovsky , waltz of the flowers

lol This brings me back to my youth when Tower Records had that magazine (Pulse?) that used to list "Desert Island Discs" (the ten CD's you'd take with you before getting stranded on a deserted island).

So here are my 11 "Desert Island MP3's" (off the top of my head...subject to change at will);

[in no particular order]

- TUSK by Fleetwood Mac

- SYMPTOM UNKNOWN by Maxwell

- STRAWBERRY LETTER 23 by The Brothers Johnson

- EL BAJIO by Celia Cruz

- NO, NO, NO (You Don't Love Me) by Dawn Penn

- FIX YOU by Coldplay

- WINTER IN MY HEART by The Family Stand

- EL PRESO by Fruko Y Sus Tesos

- HASTA AYER by Marc Anthony

- CHILDREN'S STORY by Slick Rick

- POSSESSION by Sarah MacLachlan

That gives me a nice sampling of my various favorites, and NO PRINCE (I assume that Sheila E counts as "Prince"???).

Maybe we can sneak an 8 Gigabyte flash drive onto our deserted island so that we can come up with more than one "top 11" song playlists?

Like, maybe a "Top 11 Dance songs", "Top 11 Rock songs" and "Top 11 Love songs", for example?

Those are nice.

Reminds me of my old tape with classic love songs played by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Wish I could find it on CD since no longer have a tape player.

Good list. I notice that you listed something by Weldon Irvine. I just discovered him this year, although I'm sure he wrote or played on something I had already heard. I'm diggin' his stuff so far. A song called "Morning Sunrise" is my favorite right now. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

"Morning Sunrise" was written by his protegee, Don Blackman and you could also hear him sing a better version(IMO) in Twennynine's "Best Of Friends" album.

He was the one who co-wrote the standard "To Be Young, Gifted & Black" for Nina Simone, great musician. I only have "Sinbad" & "Sisters" from him and will plan to get the rest of his albums, he's one of the artists I have to take my sweet time in listening to.

Great idea! I'd like to see different categories, especially if theres a funky jazz catogory smile

I just thought 11 was a manageable challenging number of songs to choose, but if you need to post a new set every week or whatever, i'm not here to stop anyone! most of my rules are bendable.

Is Sheila E Prince? I think they might be some sort of astrological complimentary twins, but for this thread i would only rule out the songs of hers that he's written or playing/singing on

Thank you every1 so far for posting all these gorgeous songs -- i feel musically enriched and it paints a picture of you
