Freddie & Yoko were already mentioned. Yoko was never a "superstar" but she IS an internationally renowned figure...in a way, in music and socialism.
M.I.A.'s not looked at as a "superstar" either though she's also renowned. The other two are popular in their own countries so yeah they could be superstars. I think the question who would be an "Asian superstar" HERE in the U.S. but he did count worldwide too so I guess that's why these names are brought up.

LMAO! | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I meant on the charts. Come on you actually think the stupid American press would give Ms. Ono that recognition considering she "ruined the Beatles" according to those idiots? COME ON.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And let's be honest the only reason Yoko would be regarded "superstar status" was because of her connection with John Lennon but people won't be honest and admit Yoko influenced John's solo career. That's why I said what I said. You can claim that's a laugh but Yoko never got the respect she deserved. Real talk. That's why I said she was never a "superstar". I even quoted it.

I've known about Rain since 2007 before he did Speed Racer. I remember seeing a video of his on Pop Japan TV (one of my favorite shows at the time )

Japan has several potential stars
There was a duo called Pink Lady that were huge in Japan in the 70s and 80s and had a show here in US. There was also Puffy AmiYumi that had a cartoon on Cartoon Network back in 2007/8
There's Ken Hirai [img:$uid]http://rosepetals19.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/3491.jpg[/img:$uid]

I've asked this question before to friends in bands, major labels seem to be manufacturing white, black, latino pop stars how come they're not applying that same thing to Asians?
As somone pointed out before, the foreign based artists are not really interested in international markets so much because their home countries/regions are already lucarative. There was some push for Utada here in the US but she was not very interested in much touring or promoting. Puffy AmiYumi had some success a few years ago after they got a show on the cartoon network (ran 3 seasons). But appears they didn't do much here after the show ended. Having worked with some Japanese artists myself, it's tough to schedule US tours, there's the transport costs, plus huge requirements regarding equipment and soundchecks.
But I think a lot of folks just don't take Asian artists seriously. Besides all the cheesy, cookie cutter, euro-trash sounding pop there are some excellent artists. But most folks don't seem to care. Even on this forum, threads with Japanese artists will pop up only to get at most 2 replies then die. Some people say it's the language thing, or in the case of female singers: the child-like voices; but I think a lot of people just can't open their minds. They see an Asian artist, they instantly think 'foreign'.

From what I read, Pink Lady's variety show was a disaster. The producers had them to covers of popular US disco hits rather than their original hits. Puffy's cartoon ran for 3 seasons, got good response.
Puffy AmiYumi is coming to NYC in Oct: http://www.superglorious....wcase-2010 They may put out an album in the US this year.
I saw Ken Hirai at BB Kings a few weeks ago, he sold out the venue 2 days in a row but tickets were at least $125.00! 95% of the audience were Japanese. He spent a good chunk of the time talking to the audience but they loved it cause he's apparently hilarious. His vocals were good but I felt his songs sounded like watered down R-Kelly-ish tracks. I think with the right producer he can do good here.
Crystal Kay... meh. I don't thinks he's even doing well in Japan anymore since Thelma came out.

Maybe that was some of the older stuff because some of the stuff I've heard from Ken isn't R. Kelly-esque. I still need to check his entire catalog
Crystal's doing okay. Her mini album is still in the top 30 (debuted at #13) and she's doing a drama series "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Music, music, music.
We know there's major Asian superstars in other entertainment fields.
I thought that was the point of this thread, otherwise why is it doing in just Music: Non Prince and not GD then?
Exactly. | |

Alot of 80's high tech AOR from Japan is great, but unfortunately its in japanese:lol:
I got a few albums but its often too hard to get pass the language barrier for me.
I wish Chage and Aska would release albums in English. Only a few songs are in English and both for American soundtracks. Heres one of them:-

None of the people mentioned so far are musicians or even superficially talented (bar Freddie). That could be why there are not more asian "superstars"
The only asian musician I rate is Ryuichi Sakamoto

I guess not really a "superstar", as jazz-fusion isn't the genre for that. [Edited 9/14/10 19:14pm]
