I'd say "Kiss" for Prince especially in Europe

Dolly Parton "Nine to Five"

Oasis "Wonderwall"

Kelis "Milkshake"

Karyn White "Superwoman"

Brandy "I wanna be down"

The Killers "Mr Brightside"

Marvin Gaye "Sexual Healing"sad

James Brown "I feel good"

Amy Whinehouse "Rehab"

The list goes on...

Ahhh now that would make sense, why did I forget that? lol

@ your Marvin song... well technically it's his biggest hit to date but most of the time it's either "What's Going On", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "I Heard It through the Grapevine", "Inner City Blues", "Mercy Mercy Me", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" or "Let's Get It On". "Sexual Healing" would fall in most people's laps but I think, like Michael, like Prince, like James Brown, like some others, Marvin had a lot of signature songs.

I wish people wouldn't ignore his material. lol

Either "Purple Rain" or "Kiss" would be my choice.

I never heard "When Doves Cry" on the radio during the 90s and I think I saw the video only once on MTV. It might have been re-introduced to the airwaves more lately, I don't know. I remember seeing "U Got The Look", "Cream" and the like far more on the video channels. "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" was a massive hit in Europe and I think at least people of my generation around this part of the globe would be more familiar with that song than with "When Doves Cry". This might be simply due to the difference between what songs have gotten played in the US and Europe.

Prince has many popular songs, but we're naming the song that the artist is most known for - Doves was it for Prince because it brought him mainstream success and raised him to pop superstar status. In fact, many of the artists we list have other popular songs, but there's always that one song that took them to commercial success.

Sure, but that doesn't make it the song an artist is most known for. Obviously, I can't make any definitive claims what's the most recognizable Prince song in the wider public's eyes, but at least in Europe it's not necessarily "When Doves Cry".

^ That's true. As a fan, I prefer other Prince songs. I thought Doves was it for the major audience only because it's always listed as one of the top 10 songs in the 80s or some other lists like that (US only). Again, it's hard to pinpoint one signature for legends. They have so many great hits.

I don't think so.

Probably has something to do with where in the world you ask, but I would guess "Hero" or "One Sweet Day". "We Belong Together" is the more recent best known song.

I don't agree with the bold at all. Escapade? Really? Over Nasty? Rhythm Nation? That's The Way Love Goes? I Want It That Way >>>>> everything else Backstreet ever released. It's undoubtedly their signature. And yes Holiday is a classic and was her first taste of success but you can't say it wasn't overshadowed by Virgin, Prayer, Material Girl Madonna...

I agree lol. "Escapade" is NOT even a top 5 signature Janet song... I'd even rank "All For You" ahead of it.

I'm a huge Marvin fan but unfortunately in Europe I think 'sexual healing' is his most well known song. I think it’s my least favourite hit of his - hence the sad face.

But I think in the states “what’s goin on” and “let’s get it on” are rightly considered bigger classics.
