Red Hot Chili Peppers Been listening to a lot of funk lately and i can not stop listening to Sly & The Family stone as well as Chili Peppers.
As a musician myself i can say these guys are so widely respected by so many different types of people and genres, I Have had there stuff on repeat like crazy! so i know there has to be some fans here this band is just to kick ass and so i think they deserve a thread
So i have all there albums..... MANY will disagree but disregarding One Hot minute, i think there a rare band that got better with ever album i mean, there first album was a great funk/rap/metal hybrid with fun song's, Freaky Style was a big step up adding more layers to there song's and great solos by Hillel. This is also the album that is almost 100 percent funk, not that there other albums aren't funky as hell but this one is definitely owned by Fleas bass, The Uplift mofo party plan, Jack & Hillel's last album with the band sadly=[, but man do they play there heart out on this one. Mother Milk was the introduction the AMAZING John Frusciante on guitar and Chad Smith on drums.
From there i believe there albums got progressively better, and i think Stadium Arcadium is there best album, it represents so many different styles, and everything the band is about mixed into two great albums.
So what's everyone else's favorite Peppers album=] Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

every album has their speciality 4 me that it's hard 2 choose a favorite but fruscante adds so much 2 the chemistry, blood sugar sex magik, californication, by the way and stadium arcadium are my favorites!!
ultimate song is suck my kiss ..damn that's FUNKY!!
Tell me baby FUNKY!!
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Actually I have seen them four times. Twice on the BSSM tour, once in 1999, and once in 2006. They are a great band to see live.

They are one of my all-time favorite bands. BSSM is an absolute masterpiece. Especially if you'd been following them through their early albums and then lived with the lunacy of their success around that release. All of a sudden your favorite party band was one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Weird.
I do love their early releases, the energy of them. But a lot of the songs are pretty nonsensical and silly. I find it difficult to listen to them on any kind of a regular basis. I again think BSSM is the beginning of them really hitting their stride in the art of songcraft. Mother's Milk is the transition, BSSM is their musical epiphany.
I despise One Hot Minute. Loathe. Hate. Abhor. Detest!
I agree with you about Stadium Arcadium. And it pretty much blows my mind that they evidently submitted a three disc version to begin with. The b-sides that have been released from that album are quite good, but I'm actually glad they label kept it to two discs. It's almost overwhelming at that length. Took me a good six months to get fully comfortable with both discs.
However, as much as I love Stadium Arcadium, I really can't elevate it too far above Californication and By The Way. It's actually those two albums that solidified the RHCP's place in the history of "popular" music. There was at least ten tracks between those two albums that received regular video and radio spins (some of them to the point that I still don't need to hear those songs
Now, I love Jane's Addiction. I mean I love them. Like, crazy love. Had a friend turn me on to their first album (the one BEFORE Nothing Shocking) waaaay back and I've been one of their die-hard fans ever since. I've listened to Ritual as much as any other single album I can think of. However, Dave does NOT belong in the RHCP. In fact, Jane's HATED the RHCP. Openly and vocally. So when Dave joined the RHCP and Flea played with Jane's neither one of them worked for me. I think Dave's playing is GLARINGLY out of place on One Hot Minute. I just doesn't sound or feel like a RHCP's album to me. And I know Jack Irons and Hillel (amongst others) were in the band first. But the RHCP ARE Flea, Anthony, Chad and John. Period. That's where the magic comes from. You can imagine I'm pretty bummed that John has decided to leave the band again as I'm just not expecting them to ever be the same.
A lot of John's solo stuff is well worth hunting down if you haven't, btw. It's hit and miss from song to song. But some of it is really brilliant and exciting.

I Agree on Navaro, and this is also coming from a big ''Addiction'' fan! he is a great player and that is a great band=], but indeed he just did not gel with the guys!
And yes Californication was my introduction to the Peppers, every morning when i was 11 mtv in 99/2000, was still pretty good about playing videos and at the time i though Californication was coolest thing i had ever seen lol, and i though Otherside was also a sick video!,
By The Way, get's some flac from some people idc.... i love it glad you love it to
John yes, i have Niandra Ladies! that's a very mellowed out and fascinating album to me i love it!, Smiles is his infamous album when he was deep into Heroin, the song's are strange and haunting but the cd is worth a listening i think.
Sadly i haven't heard the rest of his solo stuff=[

I saw them live back in 98/99? at the Target Center, they were the first band that I really got into.
Flea shut it down with the Pink sweatpants
Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californiacation are probably my favorites
I don't listen to them very often anymore
Everything after Californiacation sucks imo

I am not one to abandon a band once they hit 30 & mellow slightly, so I still enjoy their music quite a bit, though I have to say it does not seem quite as exciting, funky, essential, or fresh as it once did. But it is more musical than ever.
I felt that By The Way was a great collection of songs, just a tad too long.
Initially I was a little bored by Stadium Arcadium, but I began listening to disc 2 by itself and have become quite a fan of it. So much so that I am prepared to say it is maybe their best collection of songs--but not their best album, which remains BSSM. SA really is a showcase for John Frusciante who takes their core sound and fleshes it out. He's been doing it all along, but he shines here more than any other peppers album IMO.
One Hot Minute is an underrated album as well. I thought Dave was a good addition and made them a harder rock band in a good way and at the right time. My Legacy

See, I just don't understand this at all. By The Way and Stadium Arcadium are just variations on Californication and imo contain quite a few songs that are better than anything on that album. As NDRU points out, it's them continuing to work out different ways to present the same basic RHCP concepts. I know you actually said John, NDRU. But I think Chad and Flea shine on SA as well. It's a very long, dense album and it definitely takes a good long while to let everything fully sink in. Can't agree with you about One Hot Minute, though. It's crap.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah Californication set the blueprint for their more melodic sound. What they are doing now is certainly no worse.
I agree about Chad & Flea, they are spectacular, I just had not ever appreciated John so much as I did on SA. And not just on guitar, but in how he helps disguise Anthony's vocal weaknesses.
I love Anthony, but I understand those who hate ther RHCP because of him. He is a great frontman and a great personality, but technically not the musician the other three are. He is the reason I tend to think their albums get a bit long, but I can take 45 minutes or so without any issue.
I agree with you, John leaving the band really makes me wonder how they will continue My Legacy

For better or worse (and it's definitely the latter on occasion), Anthony does write nearly all of their lyrics. So there's that. Otherwise, while his voice isn't spectacular, he does sound EXACTLY the same live, which is something that really pushes my happy buttons. Very few things I dislike more than seeing a band I love live and having the singer not be able to pull off the vocals from the album(s). Also, I agree with you 100% about the way John and Anthony's vocals worm in harmony, but I don't love John's voice as much on his solo stuff, either. Some it's fine, but I'm not a huge fan of his falsetto on it's own. However, behind Anthony it sounded great!
The weird thing about the next Chili Peppers album is that they replaced John Frusciante with Josh Klinghoffer. Josh had actually already done a good amount of work with the Chili's, and even more with John on his projects outside the band. So, in theory, things should be OK. My fear is actually that he'll be too much of a John Frusciante clone, only not as good.
Speaking of Josh, Gunsnhalen, you should check out the Ataxia albums if you get the chance. Meant to comment on this earlier and forgot. I'm not a big fan of John's heroin era and/or experimental stuff. But his latter solo work and the Ataxia albums definitely hold some hidden gems.

Thats the issue.
Usually a Chili Pepper track hits you in the face and leaves you wanting more.
It seemed like they were trying to broaden their fanbase with By The Way/Stadium Arcadium and it didn't work for me. (A few of my friends jumped on the bandwagon at that point without any prior knowledge).
You can't replace Frusciante either imo.

I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers!!! My favorite album is Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Favorite song, Breaking The Girl. The video for that song was awesome too!

AGREED. But I don't hate OHM. There are some classic songs on that record. By The Way is my fave RHCP record. The melodies , musicianship, vocal harmonizing , and subtle use of synths .........WOW , a masterpiece in my book.

I grew up with these dudes and I love their music, but after reading Scar Tissue I thought Anthony Kledis was one selfish motherfucker and Flea was and still is a saint. I loveed their music since Mothers Milk and have enjoyed most of their albums, the best was probably Blodd Sex Sugar Magik with By the Way a close second. Stadium was shite it sounded like all their other stuff. By the Way was a work of art. One Hot minute was poor but Aeroplane and My Friends were okay.

In no particular order:
Blood Sugar Sex Magix Uplift Mofo Party Plan Stadium Arcadium Mother's Milk Californication
"One Hot Minute" DID have some good tracks. I like "Warped" (yeah, it sounds more Jane's Addiction than RHCP, but I like JA, too), "Aeroplane", "One Big Mob", My Friends", and "Walkabout".
I saw RHCP on the Stadium Arcadium tour and they didn't play anything older than BSSM.

Their music makes me feel nauseous for the most part, I do have a nostalia-tinged soft spot for One Hot Minute though.
I read some of Scar Tissue once, Kiedis is a colossal moron and no mistake.

I totally agree. Anthony's lyrics are not amazing, but they carry much of the personality of the band. They are fairly free, honest, sensitive, silly, and crazy. Despite his weaknesses, I can't imagine another person fronting the band.
I am not sure I could get through a Fruciante album, from what I have heard. I could be wrong, but it seems a bit painfully avant-garde. I have only heard bits of his music. But he is a great chili pepper.
I didn't know they'd replaced him already. I guess you have to keep the corporation afloat! Hopefully it'll work. My Legacy
