Interesting to hear the demo version. UK pop singer Gary Barlow took it to no 1 in 1997:-
Only a casual Madonna fan, but the album in general is lackluster. If I was a fan of mid 90's rnb, then sure I would probably like it, but its quite obviously a charm offensive (or inoffensive as the music seems to suggest) to offset the people she upset with "Erotica". Some of the songs sound tired and predictable to me. Too midtempo. [Edited 8/31/10 16:51pm]

Also I just felt the album was too safe. It may just be Iam not a big fan of the producers off "Bedtime Stories". The title track, despite being ambitious, is just not my thing at all for example, but I just can't get into it.

"Secret" is, of course, pure perfection and there are some other great songs like "Human Nature," "Take a Bow," and "Forbidden Love," but it's way too uneven and (at times) even boring IMO. It's a step up from Erotica, but all of her subsequent albums have been better. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I get a "bored" feeling in Erotica and Bedtime Stories...these were very two intresting times in her career but they were also in my opinion the "mid-life crisis" albums. Like I can feel that she was in the studio, but not really feeling any of it.
Bedtime Stories I dont spin too much but the singles released were AWESOME..the videos were great also. its just the album tracks seem to just linger..except for Survuval..and Id Rather be Your Lover..was a bit catchy..I cant remember the rest Straight Jacket Funk Affair

My only criticism of 'Bedtime Stories' is,the grooves are too slow. There's not alot of uptempo stuff here. It's actually a mellow album, which is fine, but after awhile,I'm left wanting to hear some harder, faster beats. This is one reason why 'Hard Candy' is a more enjoyable album to me.

I'v e always felt the album never lived up to the title track in the sexy department.
Erotica seriously started playing on my itunes as I typed. Creepy~~ Space for sale...

I made a couple of compilation CDs years ago called Fuck 101, and Fuck 102. They are songs mixed with rain/thunderstorms/etc to evoke a sense of romance. The songs are sequences from slower to a climatic ending, like making love. On both sets, I ended up using "Erotica" as the big ender (I used a remix on the 2nd CD). "Rope Burn" from Janet, and "Justify My Love" were also used as part of the ending moments. Those songs truly get my motor going.
As far as Erotica in general, it had a very street edge to it, less polished, rougher, but was still sexy to me.

Let Down Your Guard and Your Honesty should have been included on the actual album. I think they qualify as grooves... "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

I just read that and it doesn't make sense. I think I meant to say it would be interesting to hear the tracks that came between "Bedtimes Stories" and "Ray Of Light", the albums. My bad!
