At the very least, they need to give Doris the "Betty White" treatment, lol. I mean really; she's 88 too. Sometimes I almost forget that Doris Day is still with us!

I love LIZ and I believe her. Doris's son Terry Melcher passed away a few years ago.

That's how I know all about them. My mom and I would watch TCM and AMC all the time as a kid, which is why I'm the only straight dude who knew shit like there were 3 versions of A Star Is Born and the songs from Seven Brides For Seven Brothers falloff

I did get to learn about Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and The Nicholas Brothers so that's a plus cool

Ya'll disbelief

It took every bit of strength from me to watch that movie with a straight face, I swear o' god lol everytime I come back home and hang with my momma and let her dominate the remote control, thats some of the shit I had to endure.

She damn near lost it when TCM showed The Unsinkable Molly Brown, I was on the verge of asking her "have you lost your good fuckin' mind?" and shaking her, but knowing the repercussions that I would've faced, all I did was give the woman my signature side eye,,,,not like she gave a shit, much to my dismay sigh

Actually, they've tried to do LOTS of stuff for her but she's a recluse. The Grammys gave her an honorary award 2 years ago and she didn't show. I wanna say they tried to give her a Kennedy Center Honor and she declined cuz she'd have to show up. I think she has a fear of flying or some shit.

nod That too. Stars from that era took their appearance seriously and I'm sure that aging is even harder to deal with for them.

From Wiki:

While Day turned down a tribute offer from the American Film Institute,[citation needed] she received and accepted the Golden Globe's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in 1989. In 2004, Day was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom but declined to attend the ceremony because of a fear of flying.[citation needed] Day did not accept an invitation to be a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors for undisclosed reasons.[citation needed] Both columnist Liz Smith and film critic Rex Reed have mounted vigorous campaigns to gather support for an honorary Academy Award for Day to herald her spectacular film career and her status as the top female box-office star of all time.[17] Day was honored in absentia with a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in Music in February 2008.

Oh I love me some musicals,,,,Busby Berkeley, hello? lol love

Loooooved the MGM musicals back in the depression era(and yes, the war years). But to me most musicals became generic and safe during the McCarthy era,,,,at least back then(esp Berkeley's movies) you could feel an uderlined "fuck you" attitude - which is right up my alley.

But as much as I love my musicals, I'm partial to the Bette Davis/Marlene Dietrich tradition - movies with bitchy dialogue sexy

Love them, plus my girl Norma Shearer. I just saw a documentary on TCM last week narrated by Jane Fonda called Complicated Women that dealt with the roles of women in Hollywood before the censorship of the Hayes Code. I didn't realize how overt women's sexuality and independence was before the code took effect. Norma Shearer was the queen of that shit.

I hated how she got typecast as the "helpless good girl" post-code.

Watch all of the movies she done pre-1934 and the ones after, you'll notice a BIG ingredient missing; spunk. But at least she found work, unlike Gloria Swanson, the code hasn't been good to that lady. Its no wonder why Bette Davis flipped out and went public with her war against WB.

Speaking of overtly sexual, do you have this series?

Tame comparing to the stuff we have now, but very interesting, somebody from one of the documentaries included in there said that the 60s was nothing but revival of late 20s/early 30s, as far as sexual revolution was concerned.

nod I totally agree about how she was portrayed post-code as for getting work, no doubt, having a studio boss as a husband didn't hurt. I'ma have to check out that series tho.

Look at this wealth of information from a woman who didn't know Doris originally sang Que Sera Sera. Boggles da mind poke
