Her mother gave her mixed messages as a child. I think she about admitted she was part black. I don't even think SHE knew until much later about her identity. Something was up with her mother.

Doris Day was awesome as Calamity Jane. I used to watch it alot growing up, and saw it recently and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Its a Star Is Born-ish kinda flick, but she acted her tail off in it, I watched it in TCM couple of months ago when I was on my sick leave.
