Well, considering the broad was already off the deep end, that shit just put her over the top. It wasn't as if it were Alicia Keys getting emotional during a song, this chick was having issues BEFORE the whole breakdown-and-cry routine. You can call me "ROC" for short

Looks like she may have been performing a song "in character", and may have just been a costume for a particular song, like Bette Midler has been known to do.

I wouldn't doubt that she's broke. I bet she gives Rohan thousands of dollars a month to pay child support to the other children he's fathered with other women. She will make a comeback because she needs the money. If that's the case, I hope she flops.
I love her "Miseducation" cd, but I can't see her making a successful comeback if her hear isn't in it and it's just for money.

She has been known to tour or play shows here and there for money but I doubt she'll make a full comeback with new music purely for that. She has already said on many occasions that she could've released something to feed the masses after Miseduation but the material would be insincere and not meaningful and she refuses to do that.

I could say a million things right now but I'm not gonna...
But I'll tell you right now that Lauryn is working on new music and her new album (if/when she turns in the master) will be released on Sony.
Source? My manager is representing her internationally and just got back from Portugal with her a couple weeks ago. He worked with her back in the day as he was an executive at Ruffhouse and he is one of the very few people that she trusts 100%.
I'm not gonna say anything more about it and dog him out. I know everything about the project and Lauryn's state of mind right now because I ask him. And I ask him because I genuinely want to know and not because I want to be an internet hero for sharing all that information publically
But when I see shit like this, it's frustrating as a semi-insider who knows what the deal is.
As for losing her mind.... nowhere near. |

Congratulations to you both for liking it.
Erin, you might have the same hat but you sure as hell don't have the granny hair that apparently completes the look. I still don't think you'd wear that shit without whore-heels and the guarantee that someone hot would be grabbin you by the neck and ripping the outfit off your ass.

Well, whatever, as long as she gets over hating white people.

Thanks for sharing Militant. I admit I had my doubts about her in the past but I never once thought she was crazy.
Can you tell us anything about where she is at musically and what might this new album sound like? [Edited 8/25/10 22:34pm]

Not only do I not think she's lost her mind (again), but I don't think the outfit looks that weird (as others have mentioned) AND I still find her really attractive. Always had a weird thing for her. Also, I've seen guys all over the place (rock and rap musicians, ball players) wearing the exact same glasses with the black frames. Lauryn's just rockin' some kinda tortoise shell lookin' frames instead. However... ummm.... I do agree with John about the Granny hair.

I hope you're being sarcastic. Our manager who I mentioned, is white. So are half the people at the label. So are the people booking her for shows.
That whole rumor was baseless to begin with. Lauryn is not and was never a racist.
Martin00, the truth is that I don't really know what the new album will sound like. I haven't heard any songs, I just know that she is working on a new record and she's serious enough about it to be talking to the label and things like that. |

Militant, what do you think about my thoughts earlier? I just think that she's been a little intimidated by her own enormous success of "Miseducation" that she's been simply scared to release anything new. Knowing how great the expectation is for her work. I hope with this new project that she let the music flow freely and not try to recreate the success of Miseducation, like our dear Michael did after "Thriller." There's nothing wrong with being motivated by past success, but I don't think an artist should be held captive to that success for the rest of their career either. Besides, its rare that an artist have all the stars line up for them like that more than once in a career anyway.
I do think we're witnessing the beginning of a return for her. The shows she's been doing lately are like pre-season for her, they're warm ups for the regular season (album release). I'm just glad to know that she's serious and talking to the label. [Edited 8/26/10 5:51am]

Nice to see Church Lady style making a comeback. Did it ever really go away?

I kind of have a different perspective on it.
Lauryn wasn't so much intimidated as she was simply burned out and tired.
She wasn't new to massive worldwide success with "Miseducation". Don't forget, "The Score" was equally successful prior to that. Maybe Miseducation sold a little bit more, but the effect is the same.
Past that point of success, this business becomes insanely tough to deal for a lot of people. Look at Michael. Before "Thriller" he was a worldwide star, but there was still that element of normality about him. The success fundamentally changed him and set him on a different path.
Also....Lauryn was having problems with the fame and the lifestyle and the pressure even before Miseducation. Plus, she couldn't really turn around and make the exact album again 2 years later....just like Prince wasn't going to make "Purple Rain 2".
Certain people are held captive by past success. D'Angelo I would definitely argue is one of them. Axl Rose, too. Even Dr. Dre.
But I wouldn't say that about Lauryn. Sure, if she's doing a "mainstream" project like she is now there is an element of pressure. But I don't think she's setting out to "top" Miseducation, and I doubt she's even analyzing why it worked, or is intimidated by it in any way, form or fashion. I don't think the success of "Purple Rain" intimidated Prince either. Some people just aren't like that.

No way. Her solo joint was way more successful than anything she did with The Fugees. Miseducation gave her worldwide noteriety, especially as a crossover artist. She never got that with The Fugees. She was pretty much known in the Urban/Hip Hop market with The Fugees. Because of Miseducation, Hollywood was about to open for her. Drew Barrymore handpicked her for the Lucy Lu role in Charlie's Angel but foolishly she turned it down. She wouldn't have gotten that kind of invite had she never released Miseducation. You can call me "ROC" for short

That just isn't true.
"The Score" did 7-8 mill. "Miseducation" did 9-10 mill.
There's not a lot of difference in the effect, post selling 5 or 6 million records.
Maybe the Fugees stayed urban in the US, i can't speak on that, but here in Europe they were most definitely pop and all over the mainstream media.
People also remembered Lauryn from "Sister Act 2" which regularly has been repeated on UK TV pretty much since it came out, lol.

Well that was then this is now.

"The Score" attained most of it's crossover popularity off the strength of "Killing Me Softly", too. It was a Fugees album (and a great one, imo), but a lot of Lauryn's success with "Miseducation" was as a follow up to that song and nothing else.

You're missing the point. This isn't about "sales" this is about recognition/celebrity. She was in a group, so she was known as being part of that group. Once she went solo and blew up, she herself became a household name. She was bigger than The Fugees after her solo joint, and would've probably have been bigger than Clef had she not vanished from the scene at the peak of her popularity.
