I like the list so far, but here are some others I can think of:

Robert Johnson

yes, I have never heard him described as a rhythm guitar player, but obviously that is what he is for the most part, with fills thrown in

Being always partial to keyboardists, I have to say my knowledge concerning other musicians is quite narrow(although I'm trying to expand it recently).

Aside from Nile Rogers & Roger Troutman (who I think was THEE best rhythm guitar player that ever lived). Who are your fave rhythm guitar players?

One of the brothers from the Brother's Johnson, and whoever that dude was that played those guitar licks on that old school song "tighten up". Also dude from James Brown's band. Im so bad with names but I remember licks. lick

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Alex Weir was another rhythm-guitarist in their studio/tourband. I think he's family-related too (their cousin or something).

He later recorded/toured with the Talking Heads and the Tom Tom Club.

Thanks Tim for mentioning The Funkiest White Man in America:

STEVE CROPPER

As these lists have shown, there are multiple styles of rhythm guitar. I'm really impressed at the rock guitarists in the various lists.

I'd like to add:

Bruce Springsteen

Jerry Jeff Walker

Brad Gillis (Night Ranger)

Clint Black

I wish Clint Black would do an acoustic tour or put out an acoustic album. I used to go watch him play before he got famous. I've never heard a better solo guitarist than Clint Black. Absolutely phenomenal.

It was a musical instruction-show/clinic called Rockschool. 3 UK-musicians (including that drummer) teach a number of basic elements of different genres.
