Rick James almost 6 years to the date

show your love for Slick Rick.

I followed a link on youtube and ran across some Rick James live videos.

August 6 is coming up. I never got to see him LIVE. My own damn fault cause I had opportunity...

Anyhoo...

Missing Rick tonight.

pray

Enjoy

Reel

Loving "Moon Child" because he took his time with that groove and it was not overplayed on the airways...played just enough for you to develop a healthy appreciation for the song. I remember when the Glow album came out. The video for Glow was marketed as if he had "kicked" his alcohol / drug habit and was now back on the scenes, making it happen.

Rick James could have endured musically if he did not self-destruct. Kinda makes you wonder what was the initial spark that led him on the path of self-destruction. This man had talent, everything. Perhaps his view of the world, and his ability to cope was a little skewed.

I was just listening to the Mary Jane Girls this week, and was thinking about how great Rick really was as a musician. RIP Rick.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Me too!

I was in SC with my cousins and heard it on the radio.

When I got home I bought the single in Pathmark for about 50¢.

Taken from another thread:

I was a HUGE fan... I have all his albums on vinyl- except for the last two.

In high school and early college, I'd cuss a Prince fan out in a second....

Then I got Sammi, the rabid Prince fan, as a roommate.

Life changed forever.... disbelief

I still love Rick, though! biggrin

I agree! I'd like for them to remaster 'Bustin Out Of L7' and 'Throwin' Down' next.

Rick James was the first artist 2 give me a taste of funk.

I was a little kid jamming to MC Hammer in the backseat of the car not even knowing who Rick James was.

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was a Friday that day and this year it will fall on a Friday also. I was working that night and I've got to work tomorrow night also. It was five o'clock and my co-workers left so I turned on the radio. They were playing one Rick James song after another which was very unusual for that dead ass station. I sat down to the computer and checked the org and that's when I saw the news.

When I got off work, I got me a bottle of gin and some beer, got fucked up, and made my own Rick James mix. I had to do it up right since the radio only wanted to play the extremely popular songs that have been worn out over the years. There was some ass shakin' going on that weekend.

I'm listening to him right now and laughing and enjoying him. I remember knowing Give It To Me since I was a kid and found the video funny, but I've discovered more of his songs online in recent years.

Identity

3 or more years ago, Rick's business manager made the claim that several albums worth of material is in the possession of the estate but so far there has been little effort or no effort to release those tracks commericially, which really bums me out . Incidentally, "Fire It Up" is my favorite Slick Rick jam.

I'm wondering if it's more of that same stuff he was recording at the time of his death. One album's worth of songs, "Deeper Still" has already been released and the entire album was absolutely horrible. A complete sellout to the neo stool genre. I've heard bits and pieces of his unreleased 1989 album "Kickin'" and didn't care for it either. It reminded me of a continuation of his "Wonderful" album. I want some early 1980s unreleased stuff back when he had his own sound and style and the songs were unmistakedly funk.
