Do you think The Dream could school Prince on linn/and drum programming

Do you think The Dream could school P on the linn drum/drum programming

Because I sure do.

Recently, finally downloaded Love vs. Money" and Love King the CD that captures The Dream's/&Tricky Stewart programming.

That cat's a straight-up beast behind teh boards!!!! I almost wish I hadn't heard it. It has become my "Saving Private Ryan" It practically hurt my feelings, he had better drum programming then what Prince has had the last 20 years. disbelief

Don't get me wrong. I think Prince is a wonderful programer, and he was killer in his day.

But, I heard the Dream's " Fast Car " " Yamaha Kinga" and really felt like The Dream had picked up the baton from Prince. I know he leans more towards 80's Prince than the real Prince. But Prince has been veering in that directionwith his new release 20ten.

And, even with what has seemed like a slide to a simpler drum programming, Prince has continually ramped up his reliance on stock drum effects and stock loops. The Dream an astounding drum programmer, who also has created his own drums from scratch.

I know there's some mutual respect there. I'd love to see The Dream and Prince share a studio together and just program away.

Delete this thread.

There isnt anyone who could 'School' Prince on the Linn.

Stop trying to be controversial for attention.

I have to ask you the same thing

because I'm pretty sure Yamaha and Fast Car are the only songs on those albums that contain Linn drums.

Nothing on those songs hasn't already been done before and he isn't extensivly making use of that sound.

This thread is a waste of space.

Only if Prince had a stroke...

That album is hideous, actually hurts my ears, Prince did things with drum textures and sonically exciting snaps that made his songs pop, like the reversed drums on 'Starfish and Coffee' which Pharell Williams has said influenced him to be fearless with percussion, to have a try anything attitude.

This is a joke thread, right?

Because... I dig "Yamaha" but it still sounds like a poor man's "Little Red Corvette".

As for drum programming - in order to school Prince, Dream would have to come up with beats better than the following:

777-9311

The Dance Electric

Erotic City

Private Joy

just to name a few. And he hasn't come close. Nowhere near.

Prince is probably the greatest and most innovative drum programmer OF ALL TIME.

Dream ain't even in the top 100.

I haven't heard the Dream album in question so I can't comment on it but I do think that Prince's rhythm tracks could use a little more creativity. For me his nadir was probably the late '90s/early '00s, particularly the NPGMC tracks. I think he has shown improvement since then but maybe he could still do a little better. Really, I would like to see him use more live drums and/or ditch the linn for other drum programs. It was neat when he started using it again but maybe he should move on to something new.

regardless of that idea.....The thing is that we want Prince to do this or that its mainly because we want him to get on the radio, and guess what...he aint gonna regardless of who he imitates or learns things from or copies. He is too old and this is not the generation that focuses on what you got, the music industry bit into the apple of everything soounding the same, everyone being young etc....no diversity in the marketing and this is why you have what you have today, a big giant GLUT of nothing-ness.

there is no connection, One Prince is a musician, the Dream is not, never was, programming doesnt count as being a musician, can you play the shit you program, no, then you are nothing more than a computer programmer. To me Prince's best work is when he ISNT using any form of programming, whether it was that plasic sound on Emancipation or RAVE, the Dream to me is nothing more than someone trying to dig up something already done and twist it, kind of like a Lady GaGa and what she is doing, so call it what it is. Prince's best work of recent years was the "playing" on One Nite Alone the tour, and the Rainbow Children album and the crafting of that work, the mix of Jazz etc...when the Dream learns how to PROGRAM jazz call me, and dont bother calling me when he learns to play it because we will all be dead and gone by then

Agreed. It's like asking if a video game champion out play Prince on guitar. I am sure I could whoop Prince's ass at Nintendo Wii, but I wouldn't dare think I could outplay him onstage or in the studio.

As far as The Dream goes....talk to me in 20 years about what he's done. Right now, he hasn't done shit compared to anyone-- and that includes Vanilla Ice. Word to your Mother.

Prince been digging up James Brown, Jimi, Santanna and been twisting it forever.

Dreamer, Bambi, and a list of others are all Jimi rip offs riffs dumbed down by Prince to make silly pop limp dick rock.

Your point would be cool in all if you knew what you were talking about, The Dream can play and does play instruments. You must old or something. FYI, The Dream can play jazz but he chooses not to.

The Dream is a muscian, is he as taleneted on guitar as Prince no, but he could freshen up Prince's programming and his synth sounds.

We are talking about Prince's lack of innovation in programming since 20 years ago, he still leaning on the linn drum like a crutch and has done nothing innovative programming wise since. Prince is even using stock synth sounds these days, and stock drum patches.

Since you wanna bring up TRC, Prince would have never made this album if Voodoo was not released. Prince got schooled, and went back in the studio and started biting them neo soul clowns, and begin to put rhodes on everything even went and got Angie Stone, so if we gone talk about twisting sounds up that's already been done - Prince would be the biggest criminal, but you prob too busy looking at his penis, or his makeup.

Again you must be old, and don't know much about younger producers.

But yeah let's get it going then: Prince been lost since SOTT album, thought he found himself at about TRC after biting lesser-talented neo soul artist, and ever since he has still been lost with the same tired old production, and programming. NM we not going to go there though.

LOL at "you must be old".

I'm 22, chump, and there are WAY more talented cats out there making hotter beats than The-Dream. DJ Quik for one. Shawty Redd for another. Hell... even RedOne kicks the shit out of Dream.

Frankly you're a troll, you don't know SHIT about Prince, Dream could not make anything as hot as "Lavaux" (YES, FROM 20TEN) on his best day......and there ain't a single person in here who agrees with what you're saying..... regardless of their age.

So GTFO with that bullshit.

Did I say The Dream was making the hottest beats? Nope I don't think I said that.

All you know about Prince is what makeup he wears, and if he paid his taxes.

Is Dangelo a musical genius? Not really, but he still schooled Prince. Talent is overrated if you have no drive.

Prince's drum sound/programming and production have been limp dicking it for over 20 years. That's all that has been stated, no where did I post The Dream was on your little princey's level etc.

D'angelo aint on Prince level, but he schooled him.

Don't worry it's obvious Prince stole some sounds for Lay It DOwn, and twisted it to a limp dick fairy with no wings rap, well at least he tried.

First of all you have NO CLUE what are you are talking about because you are basing your opinion on AGE and nothing else, the best musician on earth is Harry Connick Jr, he can outplay anymore mentioned on this board at any instrument, straight up and down, and thats the way it is, if anyone would do research on this board instead of talking about the same old fucking boring artists like MJ and madonna and others maybe we could get somewhere, im tired of this same old debate, "or your old so u dont know" fuck that bullshit, i get bombarded with everyones new albums because i have to listen to everyones new shit as part of my job, so i hear all artists not just the YOUNG ones. You want to talk real hot producers go into other markets because the USA aint got shit on anything overseas, plain and simple, OUR current is WACK to them.

Prince goes back to the linn drum because he brought the fucking thing out there in the first place and everytime someone hears it on his record they say "oh hes going back", first of all, he has laid the ground work already so he doesnt have to impress anyone, IM tired of everyone looking for innovation, you wanna look get it from a new artist and see how long they GROW, im tired of one album wonders like Arcade Fire and AMy crackhouse being touted as saviors and cant even turn out a fucking catalog. So let Dream produce what hes got, Prince is already done what he has too, The Dream is about 20 years from being a relevant force in creation.

Actually I've studied Prince's music in depth for well over a decade, I could tell you every last bit of information about damn near everything he's ever recorded, down to what equipment he was using in the studio on any particular song, what his guitar effects pedal set up was at any gig, what songs were inspired by whom, which engineers worked on which tracks on which specific dates and at what loctions, which songs were written at one time and in what style only to be brought back at a later date and changed into a different style, any and all different interpretations that could be given to any number of lyrics, and I could keep going.

I'm not blowing my own trumpet here but I think that most of the people on this forum would say that when it comes to Prince's music, the depth of my knowledge of it is greater than most fans. You want to discuss ANY aspect of Prince's music to any degree, any time of the day, week, month, year, or decade, trust me kid, I will fucking school you so hard you'll think you're in kindergarten. Want to test me? Bring it.

And no, I don't give a shit about what makeup Prince wears or whether he has paid his taxes, you ignorant, presumptuous little fucktard.
