If its good I will buy it. If its crap I delete it.
Which is pretty fair I'd say?

Guess it depends...lol

Absolutely. If I really dig the cd, I want artwork, lyrics, liner notes etc. Especially if it's an artist that doesn't get a lot of mainstream love. Then I like to support them. Also I am collector of music so that's a part of it too. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I usually test out an album and see if it's something I like. Of course if I do, I totally buy the album. I like the physical copy (that doesn't crash like hard drives) in my hands and my collection.
The same logic goes for albums I d/l and don't like. I have no intention of buying them, and I'm sure not going to let it take up space on my harddrive, ergo DEL button is instituted.
If I already own an older album on LP, and it's OOP on CD, I have no qualms about finding a download of it (although I could rip my own vinyl if I weren't so lazy about it).
I have always believed in, and lived by, supporting the artists I like. My bandwidth usage doesn't support the artist and pay them for the service and product they're offering. Money at the register does.

Illegal download or even legal download, I always try to get the physical CD afterward if one exists.
The only time I don't is if the physical CD is out of print and second hand copies are super expensive. Two examples that come to mind are:
Y Kant Tori Read - Y Kant Tori Read The Sound - From The Lion's Mouth
If you can find me copies of the official CDs for those albums under $50, I'll gladly delete my illegal downloads. . [Edited 8/13/10 14:34pm]

Agreed, if I like it I buy it. A friend asked me to make a copy of a Rahsaan Patterson cd for him that he always listens to when he comes over. He couldn't believe me when I said, "just buy it, please". I really believe in supporting artists, not only because they should be paid for their work but I also think they should get the sale too.

Of course. | |

I usually do but I often wonder how much of the cd sale actually goes to the artist? It would probably be better if you kept the illegal download and sent the artist five bucks.

I haven't any qualms about downloading in the first place, so it wouldn't be better for me cos I want the pressed disc, the inlay cards, the accompanying essays and the physical contact with the physical objects and the memories they evoke, It's shelving that poses the conundrum, not the artists remuneration

I wouldn't illegally download an album in the first place.

I'm usually more willing to put that money towards buying concert tickets & buying related merchandise since more of it goes directly to the artist. If it's a case where getting concert tickets is impossible, then I will purchase the CD, but only if I know it's really good or I already like the band.

What do you mean? I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not. But I'm serious, I don't even like to legally download albums, let alone do it illegally.

Maybe I should have said that it would be better for the artist. I recently purchased three fairly expensive Chuck Berry box sets and I've got a strong feeling that he is going to receive very little, if any, of the money I spent on them.
