nah, without the lighting they used while shooting the video, it would be impossible to duplicate the effect in real life.
But yes, the makeup is amazing, it even looks like modern-CGI...

don't pass up his later stuff either. some great material, especially on Heathen. Terrific record, and lots of killer b-sides.

I say get everything, skip the 87-93 period... he's slumped a couple of times, but that period is the worst for me... everything else he's done i've enjoyed at some level or another. Change it one more time..

I loved Heathen but I loved Reality even more. The latest 3 albums were all building on the previous ones momentum and in a positive direction IMO. Change it one more time..

I would agree generally that's his weakest period, but there are still some gems. Time Will Crawl, Girls, You've Been Around, You Belong In Rock n Roll, I Can't Read, Miracle Goodnight, Baby Universal, Jump They Say... some good tunes there.
But overall the quality was lacking, for sure * * *

Agreed, all 3 are very good. I think i like the coheseiveness of Heathen the best but i'm a big fan of Reality as well. Was definitely a nice run over his last few records. * * *

Black Tie White Noise is a solid album for me. The problem is that it arrived two years too late. I mean, the dub sound, the loud drum machines, the bouncy keyboards, that was the sound of old-British house/techno (88-91) and some madchester tricks. Had it been released in 1991 it could have been a smash, at least in the UK, who knows.
But yeah, NLMD is awful and the Tin Machine projects have two or three worthy tracks on each record, but overall that whole alt/rock era was a waste...

I like the sound of BTWN but I think the problem is there is just too much filler material. I hate the title track. I like the cover of "Nite Flights" but the other covers I find pretty much useless. I think with a tighter sequencing and some rearranging it would have been much better. But I do think it was the start of his "rebirth" artistically for sure. I have high regard for Buddah of Suburbia and Outside. * * *

No one's giving the Heroes album any love
My 2nd Bowie album and my 2nd favorite.
The great funk of Beauty And the Beast The Rock of Joe The Lion The beautiful title track which remains one of the greatest song's of all time The dark Sons Of the Silent Age The great instrumentals
Many people might disagree do to a few of the track's being instrumentals only
When Lennon was making his last album Double Fantasy he himself said he wanted to make an album as good as Heroes Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

The best thing is the 3-disc Platinum Collection, that has almost all the important songs, except the title track of Station to Station and if you're fan of the Brian Eno instrumentals, you need to get Low & Heroes.
I'm not a fan of post-80s Bowie at all, Heathen is OK but his 90s albums are total borefests, except maybe a song or two on Earthling.
I'm pretty sure he's retired now, he might release another album just for the sake of it but he won't tour again. And he actually did so much music now, maybe he considers he did everything? After all Heathen had a lot of "throwbacks" from what I remember...

Great list, quite the same suggestions here, tough "Heroes" belongs to the list of his experimental/electronic/ice-cold side... Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves.

If you are looking for his recent work you really can not go wrong with this box set:

Five albums from 1995-2003 (Outside, Earthling, Hours, Heathen, Reality) plus each album comes with a bonus disc featuring remixes, outtakes and b-sides. It's great value as you get ten discs of music for under forty dollars. For me this era is not quite as exciting as 1969-1980 but it is well worth investigating.

**takes notes** Of course I know OF Bowie, but my experience is limited to Fame, Let's Dance and the movie Labyrinth.
He had a heart attack on tour? Poor thing. Prince esta muerto...

start with Hunky Dory and go straight through to Scary Monsters, chronologically, with Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World as afterhoughts. after that add in the other eras (90's, '00's, and finally the 80's).
Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Station To Station, Low and Heroes are the highest of the high points, but your mileage may vary. [Edited 8/15/10 22:11pm]

^ The OP said they'd purchased the 'Best of'.
Greatest Hits packages work fine for lots of artists, especially big singles acts like Diana Ross, INXS et al, but with Bowie you need the fuller picture of hearing a few of his 70s albums in their entirety.

If you have the compilation already I'd recommend buying the LPs from the periods with your favorite songs. Certainly the albums change a lot, so just go with what you know. I don't think you can go too wrong with anything between 1970-80 though.
Ziggy is my personal favorite, followed by Scary Monsters and Low. But they're all three quite different records.
